Can someone point me to any references for how exhaust length impacts performance of a four-stroke turbocharged engine, if at all?

This is in the context of a four-cylinder automotive conversion, where a very short exhaust might assist with packaging.

I know that traditional aviation engines generally run very short stacks; not sure if there's a reason this would be inappropriate for a turbo auto conversion.
