I've been investigating options for my 6.0L (basically a LS1, system wise) and found a system called "Megasquirt" that has been around for a few years as a fuel only controller and more recently updated to also control ignition. It works on virtually any engine and requires a control wheel (easily added to the crank pulley on most engines) coil(s), a module, and GM sensors for manifold pressure, coolant temp, throttle position (optional). Since these already exist on my 6.0 intake setup, it's a pretty easy conversion. Several things are interesting about Megasquirt, the first of which is it's an open source system...meaning lots of people are experimenting and inputing information to the inventor. It's also easily redundant, requiring a second box, second set of sensors, and a switch to change the output to the injectors and coils. It appears to do everything the GM PCM will do, engine control wise, and is programmable with a laptop in real time. Being able to set up the fuel and ignition curves while running on a dyno or even being run up on the ground should be a great aid in getting the most out of the engine.

While I haven't completely decided to go this way, it's currently leading the other contenders. There's a website and fairly active forum. Just search "megasquirt".
