This post is going to be pretty far out there but it's still aviation related.
So,on the days that I'm in the shop working ,at actual work, I drown out the noise of the machinery by listening to audio books.
I'm particularly fond of the dystopian future & zombie apocalypse genre.
Several of the books have begun with an EMP from high altitude detonated nukes or natural disaster knocking the power out for the whole country or world.....and then the fun begins.
Which brings me to an aviation related question........
I know an EMP will kill all of the electronics in a plane..gps,radio,transponder,ELT,radar,etc.
But any aircraft that still uses magnetos as their ignition source should still be operational,other than the electronic equipment, shouldn't they ?
Magnetos use points and shouldn't be effected...to the best of my knowledge.
Will an EMP actually fry the connections on the keyed ignition switch or should it be alright in that scenario since it is an actual hardwired component and is mechanical ?
While I do enjoy listening to the books to make the day go by quicker.....they always touch on the fact that older vehicles without electronic ignition will still be up and running because they use points in the distributor...but they never mention the fact that a lot of aircraft will still be operational too.....
Any thoughts on the subject....?
