Peter van Schalkwyk in NC just sent me some photos of his new Sonex with our EFI yesterday. Very clean installation. This is his second VW EFI project. He had over 500 hours on a Waiex before with SDS.

That makes for a very clean installation. No pic of the throttle body...do you offer one that small, or did he use something else appropriately sized?

I'm not sure which TB Pete is running. We offer a 45mm one for small engines 60-100hp.

I've flown in Peter's Waiex and it was a great airplane. Peter is top notch and I would trust anything that he uses, especially twice.

Looks very nice indeed. Are there any "bolt on" kits available like there are for Rotax? What about the electrical system on that plane. Is that being beefed up some to?

There are too many variations in cowlings and layouts to make a kit to fit most aircraft. We can offer most of the bits to do the conversion except for an intake manifold. Peter's friend has just ordered a system for his VW after being so impressed with Peter's plane. We're just shipping that one this afternoon actually.

The fuel-only EFI systems draw about 7.5 amps with the small pump so they are workable with fairly weak charging systems.

I know this thread is a little dated, but I would be very interested in knowing the CHT's Peter is experiencing.
Ross, don't guess I could talk you into contacting Peter about this could I?

Peter responded this morning with a lot of detail:

I am not sure what aircraft or what motor he is running so I will give you my observations based on a Sonex or Waiex ( Gen 1 not the B model) with a 2180 SDS EFI
Firstly, I have come to the observation that the Sonex wing works well in the climb at a 100 MPH. You can climb at slower speed but it does not yield number greater rate of climb than at 100 MPH. Does help to keeps CHTs cool.
So with that out of the way, the next question would be, where are they measuring the CHT's as this could vary with location. I use the recommended position as stated by Sonex (as in my test that yielded the highest number) and set my warning at 315 and max at 350 NOT 450. In a climb at an indicated speed of 100 MPH, I rarely go over 315 deg F. In cruise I typically see 250 to 290 depending on OAT and power settings.

I deviated from the recommended Sonex Baffling to the following.

In my opinion and if this relates to a Sonex, my starting point would be baffling and cowl inlets/outlets.
For the Low pressure outlet these are my dimensions

The Sonex plans in my opinion dimension this opening too small and this is the single largest swing I saw when I increased the size of this outlet.

I have been down this road and have reduced temp on some A/C from, ouch it hurts me to say, 450 down to a manageable 325 to 350.

I've been invited to do a podcast in early June with Jeff Shultz and Peter van Schalkwyk about EFI on VWs. Will try to give a heads up a few days before when the details are firmed up.
