For you flyers that have built RC planes and used many different types of hinges have you ever thought of up scaling the ideas and apply to experimental aircraft? I see in my head a Kevlar dowel of about 3/16" or even the same size music wire being used as a hinge (No not been drinking);) if a person was to drill one hole in the spars allowing a slip fit of the dowel you would have say an elevator that returns to neutral when pressure is released from the stick. the more stick movement the more force needed to move control surface. If a person could clamp the dowel in place or glue where no worry for movement then a compression spring could be added between spars to keep the spar gap. Well just some food for thought for you readers and builders.
