Question...does the FAA define anywhere what constitutes an "engine-driven electrical system" for the purposes of exemption from transponder and ADS-B requirements?

Clearly, magneto-equipped engines are what the FAA originally had in mind, but is it really that limiting? I don't believe that two-stroke powered aircraft with just a lighting coil have been required to have transponders.

Would, for example, an auto engine conversion with self-contained ignition circuit of an alternator/generator, battery, and distributor (not tied in to any other aircraft system) be considered to have an "engine-driven electrical system" in this context?

Cheers,

Matthew
