Hi Guys and gals, I have not visited here in a couple of years, but am back online again. We have taken over a company (defunct) some 4 years ago that used to produce a 75% scale of the Piper J3 Cub.The company used to be called Microwings Cubby with a manufacturing approval from the SACAA. Actually the original owners borrowed quite heavily from the Preceptor Pup in the design area. We took over this company and set about making an 80% copy of the Supercub. Front seat solo flown, and enclosed engine cowls, aerodynamic balance horns on the elevator etc etc. Many changes were incorporated including fiting of a Rotax 912 S engine. Should you wish to see what this LSA looks like , please visit our Facebook page Cubby Aircraft Factory.

The front seat of the Cub is difficult enough. A smaller Cub would be even harder?!?
Actually no, this was part of our redevelopment excercise. Our cockpit length from the firewall to the rear seat backrest, is the same as a full size Supercub. A friend of mine is 6ft 3 and he fits just fine. Here is a photo of a chap who is the proverbial "giant", sitting in a bare frame of ours. I am 6ft, and he makes me look small.

Who is your target market? And will you have kits as well as flying airplanes. Also what is the price range. Folding wings?
Hi Dougwanderson , yes it will be available in kit form,in fact in standard and quick build. The target market is all LSA pilots, and even PPL pilots wishing for some affordable flying. Ready to fly for now will only be for the home market in SA, but ready to fly is in the planning for the export market as well. Folding wings are not available at this stage. Price will have to be recalculated for the overseas market , as the Fabric, Nitrate and Butyrate dopes are available there. And of course the dopes are Hazchem products which makes them horrendously expensive to send by freight.
Please send me an email to [email protected] and we can work out a quote for you.
Jean.

We will at first have just the basic kit for the export market. Bear in mind 1)the frame is powder coated,2)the controls are powder coated and installed , 3) the wing construction is done in the factory jig, 4) the windows are pre-cut,5) the instrument panel is cut , with the instrument holes cut out.All this saves the builder quite a bit of time.Boot cowl, top and bottom engine cowls, belly plate, firewall, split rim 6" alu wheels and disc brakes ,seat upholstery , cabin cladding , metric hardware kit, trim cable and battery box are all included. Crating and courier to Cape Town harbour included the export kit will sell at an introductory price of $20 000. No instruments,no VHF radio, or fabric and dope is included.

While there are many reasons why a Company Fails, Poor Marketing is usually #1, Over Pricing there product is usually #2. In Kitplanes not having enough Alternative Engines is usually #3. With that said.

#1 What HP is the 912 your offering, there is at least an 80hp, and a 100hp, and I think Rotax is coming out with an even Higher HP Engine?

#2 What is the Planes Dry Weight with this 912 Engine?

#3 What is it's Max Load with this 912 Engine?

#4 So what is its useful Load, Pilot & Bags & Fuel?

#5 How much Fuel does it carry?

#6 What is the Minimum HP Engine that can be used with it?
Rotax Rick 670 (92hp)
Rotax 618UL (73.4hp)
Rotax 582 (65hp)
Simonini Victor 1 Super (54hp)
Skidoo 380HO (52hp)
Hirth F-23 (50hp)
Rotax 503UL (50hp)
Simonini Victor 1 Plus (48hp)
Simonini Victor 1 (44hp) http://simoniniusa.com/?page=Engines&Engine=Victor-1
Rotax 447UL (40hp)
etc.

Hirths: http://www.recpower.com/hirth.htm
3703 - 3 cylinder - 2 cycle water cooled 100hp.
3702 - 3 cylinder - 2 cycle water cooled 84hp.
3503 water cooled 2 cycle 70hp.
3203 2 cycle 65hp.
3502 water cooled 2 cycle 60hp.
3202 2 cycle 55hp.
etc.

#1 What HP is the 912 your offering, there is at least an 80hp, and a 100hp, and I think Rotax is coming out with an even Higher HP Engine? The 912 we have in the aircraft is the 100hp 912 S, the 80 hp will also work well.

#2 What is the Planes Dry Weight with this 912 Engine? The dry weight with the 912 Rotax is at 294 kg

#3 What is it's Max Load with this 912 Engine? The MAUW is at 600kg.

#4 So what is its useful Load, Pilot & Bags & Fuel? That will be 306 kg.

#5 How much Fuel does it carry? The fuel is in two wing tanks each holding 45 litres.

#6 What is the Minimum HP Engine that can be used with it?. Minimum HP is also dependant on the weight of the engine, in this case a Rotax 582 will be the minimum HP. LIght , geared engines, of similar weight and HP can be used in place of Rotax.
As for alternate engines, we are working on a Cubby with a Revmaster R2300 direct drive engine of 85 HP . So that will open the door to builders using VW derived engines of the same weight and similar HP.
Bear in mind that being a tandem seat aircraft, and solo flown from the front seat, the C 0f G does shift more so than with a comparable side by side aircraft, when loading. Therefore engine weight must be kept in mind .

We have today finished with the redesign of the Cubby`s tailplane , from a fixed stabilizer to an adjustable tailplane for trimming the aircraft. I must say nothing aviation is ever as simple as it seems at first glance, one small "change" leads to 8 other changes, costing uncalculated $`s . The original South African produced Cubby had the same tailplane set up as the Preceptor Ultra Pup. It works fine for light folks , but for us "grain fed" South Africans it needs a bit more trim :p:D. The stabilizer has been beefed up somewhat and is now trimmed with an electrical jackscrew. I must still do the final load test to confirm that our "maths" was done right .

Just an update of what we at the Cubby Aircraft Factory are busy with. We are preparing an airframe and wing to display at Wonderboom Airport near Pretoria in South Africa , there is an Aviation Expo taking place from 4-6 July. The same folks that organize Aero Friedrichshafen in the south of Germany are hosting this one in South Africa. We hope to have some international folks there as well, which could be good for our product`s market visibility.
Wish us well fellow aviation nuts :):D;)

As with most companies, covid has also set us back in our development. We are glad to say that we are about to start assembly of two of our product line-up. One is the Cubby Renegade and the other is the Cubby Maverick. The Renegade being the slightly bigger of the two. As we progress I will post update photos.
