This aircraft wouldn't be competitive in my view. Strega and Voodoo have been tweaked over many years with hundreds of incremental mods to get them where they are today plus you won't win Gold without a 4000ish hp race Merlin in there.

Sweet! How about a R-2800 powered Lionheart? There was a one off Beech stagger wing with large racing engine. Meant for the international MacRobertson air race won by the Dehaviland DH-88 Comet racer. ( that may have been it's second owner. .. did not compete when funding failed )

I think competitive is relative for the MB or no one would show for the Bronze race. What it is, is a scratch built same class aircraft so people who have real money, it should not be hard. As for the engine and development, Merlins are running out. Especially when they smoke one. Lots more Griffins sitting around not being used. It just requires a different focus. As for planes not doing well or does by well, racing is full of combinations that should work but don't. It is the magic of racing. Cosmic forces can deem you the loser. There are thousands of examples in motor racing. There are some that don't accept losing too and just win.

I seem to remember that one had a 700 hp Wright engine installed.

sooo, does the unlimited class actually require the aircraft be manned as apposed to remotely piloted, there is an easy 300 lb gone and a truck load of drag. Failing that, a pilot sitting in a dark hole down the back of the fuse surrounded by screens giving a 360 view does offer quite a bit of weight saving (by using structural doors) & drag saving. I am not so sure about VR goggles, apparently the F35 which does this type of thing suffers from sensor lag, & even freed from the military limitations if they can't do it, I can't see a pylon racer can solving & still affording to complete.

What fun would that be? If you want to fly RC pylon there are plenty. Fly the unlimited 1/4 scale stuff.

Stumbled across this and remembered this thread:

It wouldn’t be our modern version of fast but 500hp on a 16 foot wing would at least be interesting. I would guess someone was daydreaming of XP-77s when they drew it up.

    Just had a thought:
Heavier, stronger Rutan Boomerang with two V-8's, different cowling, and a bubble canopy instead of that cabin. ;-)

Make it symmetric, and call it a Pond Racer.

I'm doubtful if Strega will ever race again at Reno unfortunately. The show is gone without Voodoo and/or Bear there since Strega is about 40-50 mph faster than what's left in Unlimited now so there's hardly any point.

Better to take aim at the 400mph Sport Class target now and a lot cheaper. I'm hoping there will be 3 airframes exceeding 400mph laps in Sport Class in 2019 and perhaps 4 in 2020.

What happened to Strega? I haven't been following the goings-in at Reno. Did they wreck the airplane, did ther retire it to museum, sell it to the Chinese???

No point in spending the money to run it anymore. Apparently this year was the slowest Unlimited Gold race in 40 years since Voodoo has been retired, Precious Metal had the fire a couple years ago, and Rare Bear is parked for reasons unknown.

The purse is not big enough for Tiger to come out and play. Also, I believe the airplane is for sale (not the first time). What's the point of owning a racing plane that's practical for nothing else, sits 51 weeks of the year, and on the 52nd week can't earn enough to operate it for that one week? It's the same economics for Rod Lewis with 232 & the Bear--although Rod doesn't seem to play with his airplane toys much since his divorce.

I did talk with an old timer who claimed to know Tiger well; he said there's talk of some new outside money that could lead to a $3M purse in the future. I'm skeptical, but this would bring race planes out of the woodwork.

Title is beat Strega so how about one of those TA152 kits from whatchamacallit in Germany. Remember Kurt Tank wanted to race that one he helped restore.
