To get the best roll rate from a given span aileron, where is the most effective place to locate them? Putting them right out to the wing tips would give them the most leverage to roll the plane. But the airflow spilling around the wing tip makes that part of the ailerons less effective.

Would the leverage they'd have way out there make up for the bad air flow from the wing tips? Or would ailerons have more effect if they were moved in a foot or whatever from the wing tip? I've seen both ways. Usually gliders have them in a ways.

In some cases, the ailerons' location might be chosen for convenience of fabrication... particularly on an U/L. And it would seem that different type wing tips would effect the ideal aileron placement. But it would be nice to have a rule of thumb, like 1/4 of a wing chord in from the wing tip, or something?
