Permanent aileron gap seals, no tape, foam or temporary solutions.

Have people ever attempted to skip weld a rod or bent up sheet metal to the horizontal stab and elevator to help close the gap?

How much of a difference does it make to the flight qualities of a small airplane such as a Cassutt, Sonerai, DR-107, Pitts etc?
