My understanding is that the Reed STC was developed exactly for the reason that you stated, not for improved aerobatic capability.
I had heard the same, and also that clipping the wings from the root end had the additional effect of really perking up the roll rate which got it noticed as a cheap aerobatic machine.

I did my tailwheel checkout in a homebuilt clip wing Cub with an Aerovee-carbed O-200 on it. Lovely airplane to fly.

Bumping an old thread to see if there was any progress on the fuselage?

(I finished and fly a Wag Aero Cubby. Love it so much I want to scratch build another one.)
