I had heard the same, and also that clipping the wings from the root end had the additional effect of really perking up the roll rate which got it noticed as a cheap aerobatic machine.My understanding is that the Reed STC was developed exactly for the reason that you stated, not for improved aerobatic capability.
I did my tailwheel checkout in a homebuilt clip wing Cub with an Aerovee-carbed O-200 on it. Lovely airplane to fly.
