If my "imaginary friend 'Bob'" wants to build a copy of Mr. Taylor's Cub as an Experimental, he takes a look at "APPENDIX 8. AMATEUR-BUILT AIRCRAFT FABRICATION AND ASSEMBLY CHECKLIST (2009) (FIXED-WING)" [this website will not let me link] the above referenced FAA document online.

There are 182 listed tasks, not all of which apply to each build. "Bob" deletes those not-applicable. Of those that remain: "C" ("Am-Builder Assembly") and "D" ("Am-Builder Fabrication") have to exceed "A" ("Mfr Kit/Part/ Component") and "B" ("Commercial Assistance"). The source of the items, OEM, certified, PMA, is irrelevant-- or did I miss something.

IE: "Bob" builds his own spars and buys OEM Piper ribs. Of the first four tasks "W1" ("Fabricate Wing Spars") is a "D", "W2" ("Assemble Wing Spars to Wing") is a "C", "W3" ("Fabricate Wing Ribs") is an "A", and "W4" ("Assemble Wing Ribs to Wing") is a "C."
