Hello All,

My 3rd class medical expires this month and I decided to look into the basic med rules. Seems like the flight restrictions of under 250kts, no Cross border flights and under 18K work just fine for me since I fly a C172 out of KVNY. I do not see myself flying across the border anytime soon and 250kts will never happen anytime soon as I don't plan on flying anything close to that fast.

Curious if anyone made the switch? I will have no problem passing a 3rd class again but the Basic med gives 4 years between dr visits and an online course ever 2 years.

The only example I see is I have family in France and if I wanted to rent a C172 while there (N number planes are available) than I would imagine I need a Class 3 medical to do that. However, I do plan to get back to sailplanes eventually and if I did rent anything abroad it would likely be a sailplane which does not require a medical.

Thoughts?

Best regards,

Marc Webster
