I was reading up on stability calculations the other night and tripped over an equation for spiral stability. Long story short, for a given aircraft, spiral stability for a given aircraft is inversely proportional to CL. Cogs in my head promptly whirred and suggested that flying faster is a potential way to avoid spiral dives in spirally not-quite-stable aircraft. If you are in a spiral dive, pushing forward on the stick is the way out. A simple g meter is a weight on a spring.
