I just finished Eileen Bjorkman's new book and wanted to give a quick review here. It is a history of the homebuilt movement and the somewhat parallel history of her father's aviation career and construction of the his record breaking homebuilt, the Ebneter E-1. One of the refreshing things about the book is that Dr. Bjorkman is an aeronautical engineer and has built part of a couple of planes.

She starts the homebuilt history with Ed Heath and goes through the Oregon folks then into The EAA early history. Her father's history begins with a look back into his aviation crazy youth. What set this book apart was that it gave credit to those who worked with regulators to develop the regulations we have today while covering the high points in terms of EAA membership and noteworthy homebuilts. Woven into this is how somebody like Richard VanGrunsven became the big homebuilt kit maker while Bede and Rutan did not. She tells of her father's (Arnold Ebneter) design with some detailed (for this type of book) rationales for why it looks the way it does.
