Do I match drill my steel fittings into wood spars??

Lets say I have a steel fitting that attaches to a spruce stabilizer spar with 3 bolts. How do I get perfectly aligned holes through the steel and wood?...do I clamp the fitting where it should go on the spar then drill through the steel and wood at the same time?..........
