    Passive Variable Pitch Propeller

I have read of two position propellers on several different 1930's fighters. A quick search found these two available pilot actuated variable pitch models: https://www.propellor.com/ https://www.ivoprop.com/inflightmagnumodel.htm

    Today's Sketch

Regarding feedback, if you've ever flown a PC simulator you've flown without feedback to the controls. It isn't hard to get used to. The only thing I find significantly harder is trimming. You can't just trim out the stick force.

    N number and hanger rental

I had paid the "use tax" on the sub-kits as I bought them and still had the receipts and the tax returns I had sent in. They accepted that and were very impressed I had 20 year old receipts and returns on file.

    N number and hanger rental

Note that as soon as I reserved the N-number the state tried to hit me up for sales tax on a purchased plane.

Cowling design - preflight & maintenance access

The cowl on the Starduster was similar to the Ercoupe, had it open and looked at the engine during every preflight (had to open it to check the oil). A row of 1/4 turn fasteners and then just hinge it up. With the long mount to get the CG in the right place was lots of room in there as well...

Hello from Project Air on YouTube

Regarding steam bending vs. laminating, my non-airplane experience is that steam bent always has springback, and not very predictably. With laminations springback is usually negligible, even when cold bending strips. Cold bent strips do need to be thin enough to take the curve without breaking...

    Horrible news from Vans Aircraft

That is the same EAA Homebuilder week class he was scheduled to teach before all this Van's bad news broke: https://pages.eaa.org/2024-01-2403.HBW_UsedRvs_LP-Registration.html Probably the same material he has in his books on the subject.

    JAL on fire in Tokyo

Word in Japanese language media is that the coast guard plane was told to hold short of the runway, but proceeded onto it.

    Flying Pictures; Post Yours

Utah terrain can be as rough as BC's, but at least we don't have so many trees to hide the wreckage.

    Horrible news from Vans Aircraft

In addition to the ones you mention I know of at least two -7's where the vertical stab came off. I thought that they threatened to ban the -3 from competition but that it didn't actually happen. For both -3's and -8's the wing was redesigned to be stronger.

Shopping to buy (not build) an E/AB

The marketing when it first came out was very much "a RV-4 for the big and tall". Can verify that I fit in mine just fine at 6'4" and 280 lbs. Also never needed 2400 ft of the paved runways here (4500MSL) even when fully loaded on a hot summer afternoon. That with a fixed pitch prop and...

What did you do on your airplane project today?

Got the cover off and the old flop tube out. It is a bit stiffer than the new one: Probably not enough to make the engine quit. But I also found I hadn't put in the "optional" trap door that works as a check valve to keep the fuel from rushing outboard when inverted/knife edge. I thought...

What did you do on your airplane project today?

A few weeks back was doing aerobatics with only 1/2 full tanks, the engine would stumble after any inverted maneuver. Tried doing a really slow roll (about 60 seconds to go around) and the engine stopped at the 75% point. Did start up again once upright. Figure my flop tube has gotten less...

Is there any reason we do not see more energy absorbing / damping type landing gear on experimentals ?

I got the ebook version, the charts are very hard to read. Not scanned at high enough

Rivetted Al fuel tank - help please?

You don't want a nut on the inside for the drain, that would make a low spot around the drain that water could pool in and not drain out. RV tanks use a piece with a NPT thread and a flange with rivet holes. Not my plane, but some good installation photos here: Sealing the Right Tank Drain...

Lithiums in aviation use.... real world experiences

Also in northern Utah. Ran a LiFePO battery in my RV for the first few years. Got the expensive charger to charge it up after running it down when not flying (testing during build). Was great in the summer but weak in the winter. Still was able to fly down to 16F. Came time to replace it...

    Composite scissor links

Just as an example an 1800 lb RV-8A or 7A allows a maximum of 375 lbs on the nose gear, so that would change your 1.05 safety factor to 1.39. Still low, but not quite as bad.

    canopy shape at leading edge?

Did mine the same way, waited till a hot summer afternoon and had no problems. Did do lots of little cuts to creep up on the final shape because of the reports of internal stresses causing it to change shape as it is cut, didn't get much change after the initial big cut that removed the flanges.

    Questions on seat belts/harnesses

Also have the Crow belt in my RV. 5 points and the "standard latch and link" both because it was the cheapest and it was what I was used to from my previous plane. Worked fine at up to -3g with a 230 lb pilot and regular -1.5g flights. Do pull real hard on the straps to tighten it down before...
