Questions about gear speed and flying fixed gear

Yes, that's where the top of the seat frame is. The "upper extension" was probably a way of raising the attach point a little at the expense of structural weakness. Unfortunately there is nothing high enough to attach the harness to to give a reasonable level. You'd have to build triangulated...

Questions about gear speed and flying fixed gear

This is another problem. I agree that just attaching the harness to a lower bar will NOT make it a lot stronger. But looking inside the airplane there are no "big, thick, strong things" to attach to. You'd have to run cables back to multiple frame members and hope their collective strength would...

Questions about gear speed and flying fixed gear

Sorry, I didn't answer your other questions. It is kit #15, but that is not very useful because when the Titan factory upgraded the plane to the LS3 engine they did extensive mods- like replacing all the skins forward of the cockpit with thicker sheet and welding in additional triangulation...

Questions about gear speed and flying fixed gear

This is the Titan design. I'm only a "I had college physics and work on cars" level guy, but common sense and real world experience would suggest that mount is going to withstand any serious level of force in the direction it is being applied. No, there is no triangulation to surrounding...

Questions about gear speed and flying fixed gear

My personal list shows 25 "incidents" involving probably that number of aircraft, although one or two might have been repaired after the first and suffered a second, thus appearing twice. I doubt anyone knows how many are flying at any given time. Titan has sold 250-something kits, but how many...

Questions about gear speed and flying fixed gear

Because if you want a replica warbird there are no options really. There is a replica Spitfire for about twice the price that doesn't look as authentic to my eye. Otherwise nada. And some builders want the challenge.

Questions about gear speed and flying fixed gear

Those things scare me. In a crash that engine mounted above and behind you will come down and kill you. When I checked the accident record on those they have a very high fatal per accident rate. About 50% IIRC.

Questions about gear speed and flying fixed gear

The current design has a gas cylinder like is used to keep your trunk lid open pushing on the locking arm to keep it over center. The plane was at the Titan factory for 2-3 years for the engine swap and they didn't ask me if I wanted those installed, so I guess they don't think they're...

Questions about gear speed and flying fixed gear

I think the Titan system is as you describe- if the locking arm goes overcenter the retract cylinder has no load on it. Somehow the locking arm failed to go over center or popped out of that position. Then when the tire hit the pavement it forced the wheel and gear leg toward the retracted...

Questions about gear speed and flying fixed gear

I don't know of an overall diagram either. Marc and I are just going to assume the Titan system is rubbish and start from scratch, at least concerning power to the things that are necessary for the engine to run. FWIW, the engine cutting out was apparently ultimately due to the 20A breaker on...

Questions about gear speed and flying fixed gear

I can't find the post that was asking for it, but the manuals for the build can be found on their website: https://www.titanaircraft.com/t51manuals.php

Questions about gear speed and flying fixed gear

I'm working with Marc Zeitlin to fix the electrics problem. So I think that's covered. The hydraulic cylinder mounting bracket is another problem and I think I might start another thread re designing a stronger one.

Questions about gear speed and flying fixed gear

The single 30A breaker covering the entire plane is still what the builder instructions show.

Questions about gear speed and flying fixed gear

You mean like having the entire airplane including the electric-dependent engine on one breaker? :)

Questions about gear speed and flying fixed gear

I haven't measured it, but I think it's 1/4" The pump comes from the factory set for a max of 600 psi. Some people recommend adjusting the pump to 800, but I don't know how many people actually do that. IIRC the pneumatic cylinders are 1" diameter and the more recently recommended ones are...

Questions about gear speed and flying fixed gear

Yes, that is a pneumatic cylinder supposedly only good to 150psi. In reality they work at 400 continuous and 600 briefly and were used in the early 2000's when my plane was built. Titan currently recommends hydraulic ones which should tolerate the 800 psi needed with no problem. That's what...

Questions about gear speed and flying fixed gear

Yes, the system uses limit switches to turn off the hydraulic pump when the gear is fully extended or retracted.

Questions about gear speed and flying fixed gear

It's all Titan's design. From their builder's manual

Questions about gear speed and flying fixed gear

That is the Titan system. Mine is not the first T-51 to have a gear leg collapse.

Questions about gear speed and flying fixed gear

I don't recall if Elliot saw the bent brackets or not. Getting the plane back to the hangar took most of what was left of the day. When Marc was there I had removed the cylinders because they need to be replaced with higher-spec ones anyway.
