    Weld or braze?

OK, so it is established that it is better to weld....don't forget to back-step!

    affordaplane

I hear that! I don't blame you on the elements, and the a-plane is reportedly not ultra-light legal, (too heavy) so, I have been looking at these; http://nieuports.com/index.asp?page=main Good luck

    affordaplane

A-plane While researching several plans and kit options, I still have not decided on a design. meanwhile, I have found a pro/anti Dave thing, there seems to be two sides to this thing. Seems there may be serious engineering/design problems with the A-plane? Where there is this much smoke, there...

    affordaplane

Affordaplane building I stand corrected. I don't want anything to do with hepling anyone build a proven deathtrap. If anyone is waiting for plans for this, You will be best off to pray they don't come. You will be better off.

Thanks for the link. I didn't even know that site existed! See? ya learn something every day, and it ain't even dark yet! Guess I can go take a nap now.....Oh, I guess my closest is 0G0 I see 85N listed, but I thought that was closed. Maybe not. That is a bit closer, but unpaved at best

    SOMETHING REDICULOUS

Where is KPYM? I am too new at this to know all the abbreviations. At least you bothered to put something in there. Too many don't bother. I think it is helpful to have an idea of where folks are from.

    Tacking my parts together

6011 is good for rusty stuff and tacking things togeather, we always called it 'farmer's rod' good penetration thru rust and cow crap. Cleaner is always better. for the 7018 it should be clean. Keep practicing. you will be able to weld 1/16th with smaller rod, and practice. I don't think we...

    emergency blowdown system

When you mention a mess testing the system, I was a 1&2 eng. aircraft mech. in the AirForce, working in phase inspection. (F4 Cs&Ds) When we had to do a blow-down, it was quite an event. Jack up the bird, connect and run the Hyd. mule to retract the landing gear, get everything back out of the...

    affordaplane

I would like to help someone who is building an affordaplane, if I could find one within 100 miles of western NY Looks like it would be a rather quick build.

    Tacking my parts together

welds I think superbug is correct, for the most part. We all have our pet methods, and whatever you have the most experience with would be your preffered way of welding. I have had several US govt. certifications for welding aluminum with a TIG, so that is my favorite. I am getting a machine...

    SOMETHING REDICULOUS

I know this is silly, but I wanted to share it, I got a laugh, and I am sure most of you will, too. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4522969691&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT

    welding saftey

I guess when Sam Walton died a lot of things changed at Wal-mart. I was welding at a big tow-truck garage last week, and I smelled something. One of the mechanics was spraying a brake cleaner on a new brake drum. I asked to read the label, sure enough, there was perchloretheleyne, a very...

    Exhaust system alloy

exhaust Dust; so did you get it welded? I have not been on here much lately. I just noticed the date of this post, you must have it done by now

    Tacking my parts together

TIG! I like TIG best. DC, reverse polarity, SS will weld beautifully. If I had DC on my machine, I would do 'em for ya, but all I have is AC, so I am kinda limited to non-ferrous metals....at least for TIG. I do stick weld steel. Never been much of a fan of MIG, but it is OK if done right, just...

    Rochester Wings

The Rochester, NY Airport is having free seminars May 8th and 9th, there will be a banquet, not sure how much tickets are, if there are any left. The link to the website is; http://www.rochesterwings.com/

    PSRU

On the HD primary drive, the drive pulley is directly on the crankshaft, which in turn drives the clutch, to the tranny, and the final drive. This must be why the primary drive belt is 2.5"-3" wide

    PSRU

I am suprised to hear of the pulses doing damage to the belts. Harley Davidson has been using belts on the primary drive, and final, too. Is there an engine that pulses more than that? They are getting 30K miles on a belt, or more!

    welding saftey

What? the stuff in Wal-Mart is made in China? I thought it was supposed to be made in America! I know, no job saftey there, and not much pay, either. If we were to get into a really big war at this point, we would be screwed, no heavy industry to switch over to making heavy ammament, etc.

    welding saftey

I have never had the opprotunity to weld any titanium. As with anything else, I'm sure it has to be clean. Do you DC straight polarity, or reverse, like Stainless? When we were welding around the trichlor at work, they didn't have to tell us ANYTHING, and they didn't either. They even had...
