Piel CP 750 Beryl plans clarification

My plans may be a little more clear. On the rear face the 3 mm and 5 mm are scarfed together at rib 9. On the front face they are layered as the above post notes. The rib spar openings work out just fine like this. This is how I built my spar. BTW, as you know the spar drawing is very...

    Why Spruce ?

$55 per board foot? No way. I use W Hemlock. I search and find beautiful 2x4’s with nice close straight grain.(Lowes) cut into 2x2’s then flip to get the right ring angle. from here you can scarf and laminate to get anything. W Hemlock has numbers slightly better than the spruces.

Interesting tester for glue strength tests

Use a big hammer. Hit it hard one time. Wood shatters = Pass. Glue breaks = Failure. Breaks along glue line (even if it “pulls wood”) = Glue joint failure. The latter due to poor penetration. I found this using epoxy (FPL16A and T88) on Lodgepole Pine but priming with epoxy diluted to a milky...

    Western Hemlock grain quality

At The Oshkosh Big Box forum I heard that Wicks and AS no longer sell certified spruce. Instead it's just called "aircraft wood" but was never stamped as certified. Any comments?

    Western Hemlock grain quality

What kind of wood do you find at Lowes in NC?

    Western Hemlock grain quality

I did the "Big Box Aircraft Wood" presentation at Oshkosh '17. Some thoughts: Grade Hemlock to the same Mil-Spec as spruce, that is if minimal acceptable quality is good enough for you. Hemlock is cheap so I only use the best. But I laminate almost everything. Scarf for length and laminate for...

    Popped Longeron Joint - Repairable?

Before making a final decision, why not just cut out that section of longeron, that is, a foot or two on either side of the splice. Then you can get the thing out in the open and see just what happened. Then you can make a new steam bent piece and all new scarf joints. if it had just been a...

Do Aircraft Electrical Systems Use FUSIBLE Links???

It would make sense to have one close to the alternator.

Wood sources in Europe roll call...

Four or five years ago Lowes had a shipment of spruce from Germany. It was beautiful material and I made a bunch of capstrip with it. I called the mill in Germany to confirm that it was actually spruce. I have no idea what species. If a person called around to mills in areas where spruce...

Leave Nails In Or Pull Them Out??

The Arrow JT21 is a fine wire stapler that is just about perfect for gussets. These cause minimal damage to capstrips. I use the 1/4" staples on rib gussets and pull them out later. I experimented with ways to pull the staples without tearing up the wood and found a nice way: I took a pair...

Any other plans I should be looking at?

Concerning your medical: There is a good chance that the "Pilots Bill of Rights 2" will be passed... maybe soon. This will do away with the requirement for a 3rd class medical for most private pilots and you won't be restricted to LSA. On the EAA website you'll find information and...

    Clear Douglas Fir at Lowe's

The boards were stamped DFir at the mill but the paper tag on the end said whitewood. DFir is easy to spot from a distance because it has a distinctive pinkish orange and tan coloration. The fir in SPF refers generally to the White Fir group, i.e., Noble Fir etc. SPF is where I find a lot of...

    Clear Douglas Fir at Lowe's

I found 42 2x4's (8ft) of 100% clear Douglas Fir at Lowe's for $3.24 each. They were at the bottom of a full stack of lumber on one of the overhead racks. I waited over a month for them to bring the stack down. The stack on the right contains boards that will meet the mil spec after a bit of saw...

Problems with getting acetylene, any ideas on substitutes?

You should be able to find acetylene in many small towns in farming country. You'll have to ask around because it won't be from a welding shop. Ask about it at the local farm co-op or farm supply place. You'll probably have to sign a lease on a tank though since that's just how it's done...

    No insurance for teens

Well, I did finally manage to get him covered. It's with Phoenix Aviation Managers/Old Republic Insurance Company. It cost about $650 for the basic policy plus another $300 to cover my son. Supposedly that will also cover him when he's ready to solo and at that time they will remove the "dual...

    Hughes White Glue

I'd seriously doubt it's Hughes Glue. That stuff is really really tough. Old Hughes glue is kind of yellowish. I'd get really worried if glue joints are failing though regardless of what type glue it is. Any chance of getting his builder's log or talking to someone who knew him?
