    Not a usual VW platfrom?

I’d look at the chinese 912 knock off as an alternative to a 2 stroke.

    Best Ingres and egress ?

A friend has a Cessna 414. That’s very roomy in the back. A little tight getting to the front seats. On a serious note the cardinal is hard to beat. I’m loosing weight but have flown my zenith 601 at 283lbs and have no problem getting in/out. I’m still relatively young though.

Coupling two one cylinder engines to make a twin?

I’d think 2 vw engines coupled up to actually get some affordable power would make more sense than two single cylinders. Wonder how well that would work with the double roller chain/sprocket coupling shown above. Might be able to get something like O-235 weight and power on a vw budget.

    Plexus vs Pledge?

This works great for my motorcycle and it also works great for canopy’s Original Bike Spirits Cleaner and Polish 14 ounce https://a.co/d/4kUHIFt

    One Person Cross Country Options

I just bought and flew a zenith 601xlb 1100 miles back from South Carolina to Minnesota. It took a full 7 days to get back because of weather. A plane twice as fast still wouldn’t have changed much unless it was very capable in IMC. Enjoy your RV12 and just take Delta when that’s what the...

    Tack welding 4130

I’ve welded some non structural 4130 parts for my project with a stick welder and some 7018 rod. Metal wise 7018 rod is compatible with 4130 but it takes more work to weld correctly. I’m more comfortable with stick since that’s what my last job used almost exclusively for 10 years. If I...

    Where are the big wings?

I’m more surprised there aren’t more big winged vw engine planes. Since the vw options are as cheap of an engine as it gets, they should have way more functional options to haul more than 1 large person and fuel. Even if that means a big wing and 2, 3, or 4 vw engines.

    RV-14 comparables?

I’m also a bigger guy and wish there was more plane options for guys in the XL section. To me a RV10 looks tight while a RV7 looks like it was built for kids. If ease of egress, comfort, and speed are your prime objects it’s hard to beat a Velocity XL. If affordable and comfort is your...

    What If Design (WID)

The biggest thing any of us can realistically do is introduced aviation into high schools. Young eagles is great but it just don’t have the reach a vocational aviation class would have. If even 1% of all high school’s had a vocational class that taught kids to get their glider license it...

AirVenture 2022: Where have all the Ultralights gone?

In my eyes the biggest problem ultralights face is a hanger. Around me it’s extremely hard to find a hanger to rent and when you can. No one in their right mind would pay more a year in hanger rent than the ultralight cost. Paramotors seem to do ok, mostly because you can store them in the...

    Shop/Garage lighting

My garage is 27’x42’. I have 9 normal screw in bulb fixtures. They were ok with 100w equivalent led’s. But they are really good now with 500w equivalent led’s screwed in. I looked at all the options but in the end wanted a bulb that was easy to change, put out a lot of light evenly...

    Airplane for the Common Denominator

Basically all Zenith’s currently planes check off the originally boxes of this thread. Just pick your preference for speed and room. Probably why they are the best selling light kit brand, they just check off enough for a lot of people. A sonex, thatcher, or hummel would be a good choice...

    Murphy vs zenith?

I’d love to hear the specs your getting with that plane/engine combination. Especially since my next project will be a 4 seater

Best HP Half VW for an 160 lb (w/o engine) UL

How heavy are you? If your a full grown american you’d be glad to have more than 32hp. Personally I’d have a hard time not going with a 45hp 1/2 vw if that’s what I was in the market for. Especially with how close the cost is between them.

    Murphy vs zenith?

I voted with my wallet for zenith because it checks off what I need it to do and was what I could afford when I started. The ease of building is great and the factory support has been as good as I could ever hope for. When it’s time to build the next project if zenith makes what I’m looking...

Which welder should i use to build a airplane frame?

When I upgraded the nose strut to the newer zenith pucks. I used 7018 to weld up the holes on it, don’t remember the exact thickness but it wasn’t heavy wall. Before I did that I looked up preferred rod for 4130 and 7018 is the only rod that was recommended. Never got an actual answer why...

Which welder should i use to build a airplane frame?

Out of curiosity sake why couldn’t someone use an arc welder with 7018 rod for 4130 tubing? I haven’t gotten to it yet but that’s what I was planning on doing for my engine mount. That’s what I use at work so it’s what I’m comfortable with. I haven’t tried using a tig although I’d like to...

    LPA is history

As a 32 year old millennial the reason more aernt getting into GA is very simple. Most just don’t know the average joe can actually own a plane or build one yourself. I grew up in the country seeing crop dusters fly over all the time. That made flying a bucket list item. Only after looking...
