The Janowski Project - Rethinking the J1B/J2/J3

Check comment #168 above. I posted a PDF copy there. On further review, I don't think this is a complete manual. My understanding is someone started to try to sell plans before getting complete permission from Mr. Janowski.

    Free - Flightstar-based project.

Once the emotional excitement of "free" wears off, the idea of an ultralight does not excite me. I need to focus on getting flight currency with tailwheels. And moving out of Illinois and closer to a small airport.

Money . . . Time . . . Space Your generous offer solves one problem. And time can be solved by adjusting priorities. I have not figured out the space issue yet, where do I store this project near Downers Grove? The local EAA hanger is currently an RV assembly area.

The Janowski Project - Rethinking the J1B/J2/J3

I'm in Northern Illinois. It isn't me, and I'm not aware of an electric project. Also not aware of any Janowski projects around here ( but often, I can be very unaware). For my two cents, electric is a non-starter until there is a 10 fold increase in battery tech with a 10 fold cost reduction...

Probably. I think someone suggested 3 or 5 blade prop with appropriate diameter.

It seems like we might have similar thoughts. Sounds like you have thought things through more thoroughly than I have. I have not done a detailed analysis, I was offering general thoughts. My ideas are along two lines. Increase the cockpit size for a more comfortable seating arrangement...

The Janowski Project - Rethinking the J1B/J2/J3

There are a few considerations that I can think of: 1. A higher wing probably means a larger frontal area and more drag to over come. 2. Higher wing would raise the CG. On a tailwheel this might cause directional stability problems. It might raise the risk of nosing over during heavy braking...

R W Hovey prop design book

I have not had that issue. I usually go with USPS book rate, usually under $10. But I haven't bought from Abe in 2 or 3 years.

@David L. Downey My apologies, I did not vet the previous link. I was on my phone and did not thoroughly check. This link should be better. Abe Books appears to have a couple of options. https://www.abebooks.com//servlet/SearchResults?tn=Ultra-light+Aircraft+Design

Metric isn't my first language, but 16kg seems a lot denser than sitka spruce. Have you been able to do any strength testing yet?

100 mph max speed? You might want to verify if that is the NTE speed. Not To Exceed speed. In calm air, so you don't exceed aircraft structural limits.

The Janowski Project - Rethinking the J1B/J2/J3

IIRC, the old Yahoo group did note some licensing issues with sale of plans in the US. If you're an EAA member, you can search Sport Aviation articles for "Janowski" and see short articles and photos of various Janowski aircraft. There is one reference last century that 60 sets of J-1B plans...

Three bladed propeller. A fixed pitch wood for simplicity, and odd number blade count for reduced pulsation operating behind the wing. Or three blade composite, if you want ground adjustable. If you want to be really hard core, learn how to carve your own three blade wood prop.
