All moving HS or conventional HS

That does seem surprising. My understanding of an all moving HS is that they are more effective hence a smaller control surface can be used. So you would expect less drag ???

All moving HS or conventional HS

I fly a piper and from a pilots point of view they are fine. From the point of view of an amature designer they may not be the best choice. One designer I have read recommends staying clear of them as they are difficult to get right. The size and gearing of the anti servo tab is critical to safe...

    Landing gear drop test

Bill Whitney gives the following numbers for drop tests. Load to 85% max gross drop from 9 inches for limit and 13.5 inches for ultimate. I've read about greased plates being used under the tyres to allow the gear to spread during the drop test.

How can an absolute beginner get started with aircraft design?

Try a DVD, more fun than a book. I recommend Bill Whitney's design course comes on three DVDs with course notes. Welcome to the forum.

    TIG Welding 4130

With reference to welding clusters is it always possible to fully weld every tube. Say with welding a fuse side which is a series of rectangles with a diagonal member in each rectangle is it not the case that the method of assembly would prevent you from welding every tube fully.

    Fuselage load testing

Yes you don't want to be washed out the workshop door on a tidal wave :-)

    Fuselage load testing

Yes I've thought about using water, a flexible water tank as used on boats may work then just pump a measured quantity in and out. You would need several small tanks and it would probably work better on wings.

    Fuselage load testing

Yes, I would think you would be filling the fuse with sandbags!!!

    Fuselage load testing

A torsional load is applied when testing the horizontal tail. After a symmetrical load is applied some load is removed and the test is repeated with a lower load but one which also applies a torsional load. How about testing the fuselage and wing attach fittings. Would this work. Build two...

    tube bending

Another medium to fill the tubes with is welding rods. Leave some a bit longer than the rest and after the bend is made just pull them out with pliers the rest come easy. Only good for short tubes. Ian.
