    wing rib gussets

Mario, I read the website (yo vivi en Guatemala cuando era un chico...entonces hablo espanol). It has very good instruction, but I would still make the gussets with enough layers to be 1/16" thick. Thick is strong! Vacuum makes stronger gussets. If you don't use vacuum you can have too much...

    wing rib gussets

Mario, I have a composites business, and work with 200 gsm fiberglass and carbon fiber every day. That cloth will be about .008"-.010" per layer when cured with resin under vacuum. To get 1/16" thick (0.0625" or 1.6mm) you will need at least 6 layers, maybe 7 or 8, depending on the weave and...

    Cub-like 2-seater made from wood?

Thanks Billy...those are some great links! Too bad it looks like LMA have ceased opertations.

    Cub-like 2-seater made from wood?

One of my brothers was looking over my Hi-Max and asked if there were 2-seater versions, similar to an all-wood Cub? We discussed merging a Pietenpal or Grega parasol with the enclosed cabin of a Hi-Max, but couldn't think of an existing all-wood Cub homebuilt. Is there anything like that out there?

    EADS builds all-electric Cri Cri

Correct, the French use the word autonomy to mean endurance. I agree on both points, which is why successful near-term hybrid airplanes will likely use something like the hybrid system in the Toyota Prius, where the electric boost directly augments the IC engine through its combination...

    Quiet Flight

Interesting article from Switzerland about reducing airplane noise. Nothing really new, but interesting discussion and a couple of great photos. Be sure to follow the link at the bottom to the author's personal installation. Aircraft Silencers

    slowest airplane

On the presumption that the OP is asking about real airplanes...i.e., those that can be flown regularly, the TEAM/JDT Hi-Max could be a candidate. That airplane has a 25' wingspan and a listed stall speed of 28 mph. The wings are constant chord built up from repeated 15" bays. Add two bays to...

    Quiet Flight

Well, I've melted plenty of EPS with gasoline, and there was no napalm-ish remnant. It literally evaporates into nothing. OTOH, there is always pvc foam of you are nervous about fire. PVC is more rigid and pretty much impervious to gasoline. Besides, if you crash so hard that the sound...

Yep, sounds like Mazda were thinking along the same lines. It wasn't my idea, though. I read about it more than 10 years ago when I started working on my RV. Search the web on 'sound attenuation dissimilar materials' for lots of sources of more info. Sounds like that would work fine, but it...

    Quiet Flight

Very interesting thread. Thanks for the great discussion and links! :) I did notice that two areas seem incompletely addressed, which I know from personal experience can really help: coatings, and combining materials of differing densities. Years ago the boating industry developed...

Questionr egarding the Sadler Vampire ULA

Several questions, Tom... :) Does your computer program test for a power-OFF stall? Is the program using the same stall speed procedure as the FAA? If you are not familiar with it, the FAA's AC 103-7 Appendix 2 procedure uses the empty (no fuel) weight up to 254 lbs, a 170 lb pilot and 30 lbs...

    open source liability

Okay, there are some great suggestions here, but is there any practical threat? After all, guys like Mike Sandlin post their plans free for the downloading (I have all of them) on the internet with a simple disclaimer. Yet you never hear of him getting sued. Same or similar with lots of other...

    CriCri MC-15 in NZ

Oh, sorry about the low parts count...it's even worse than I feared, eh!? :gig: I recently replicated a racing car's front wing. The original aluminum wing had 57 pieces, but I duplicated it with 5 pieces total in fiberglass. My version weighed 15% less and was 30% cheaper. That might be too...

New Ultralight and LSA Trainer design PAIR 2

I applaud your innovation for thinking about rotomolding, but like Buchon I was thinking about its lack of stiffness and low thermal properties. For volume production runs closed-mold thermoset prepregs show good promise, but the tooling is so expensive I question whether that approach can work...

    CriCri MC-15 in NZ

Good God, man, how many pieces are in that thing? :dis: Seriously...how many pieces are in the basic Cri-Cri structures? I have in mind an eight-foot canoe made of a thousand pieces.
