Wow - Talk about a nice find!

So you folk all feel this is legit? I want it to be true but find I am forced to remain skeptical at this point...

Murphy Rebel parts: spring gear legs, screen, fuselage parts

Hey James, just noticed some activity on their website. Maybe you should go to OshKosh and chain yourself to their demo aircraft until they agree to sell you the parts.

Murphy Rebel parts: spring gear legs, screen, fuselage parts

I'm not sure if Murphy are still in business. Certainly they do not respond to any emails or phone calls. So the problem is not you contacting them it is the reverse. Perhaps you could try a sales enquiry for a whole new kit, you may get some sort of response at least then you would know if...

    Jabiru 2200

I fly behind them and I like. Earlier ones had several top end / overheat problems (especially in hot Australian weather) but in the last few years they appear to have sorted out most of the issues. The A/C I mostly fly has done 900 hours and all compressions etc are spot on still, this one runs...

Not any longer Jan, I already bought it sorry.

    wing rib gussets

Get some plywood made up - 3 leaves of timber veneer glued together will give you 1/16" and is quite strong with the central layer running perpendicular. This is a simple job for a veneer company, ask them to use a waterproof adhesive also. Easy peasy.

    Quiet Flight

Ah but do you need to join them? If you are mechanically fixing the panels around the perimeter then it doesn't matter. For example a sandwich with a thin glasswool core would make a superb firewall, typically screw or rivet fixed around the outside edge (less points is better). But if you plan...

    Quiet Flight

There are a wide variety of foams but taking a quick glance at EPS without looking at any numbers: Mass - it has very low mass (sound isolation poor) Stiffness - low stiffness (a positive for sound isolation) Damping - fairly poor damping (sound isolation poor) Therefore you can conclude...

    Quiet Flight

Yeah Dauntless has kinda gotten it; reducing sound transmission by means of increasing the damping properties such as with composite layering. Flatten the resonance Q. After all of the 3 properties we can play with adding mass isn't popular on aircraft. I'm suggesting it's perhaps not wise to...

    Quiet Flight

It will be fascinating indeed to see this aircraft designed to invert the laws of physics! In other advice offered water is not wet, the sun is very cold and gravity repels objects from the earth. :ponder:

    Quiet Flight

It makes sense GES but it's all wrong I'm afraid. Pick the shape based on best aerodynamics because it sure isn't going to reduce the internal sound transmission (noise level). You see a stiff structure MORE readily transmits sound energy. Said it before; there are only three physical...

New Ultralight and LSA Trainer design PAIR 2

High end equipment? You mean low. The main advantage of explosive forming is, of course, that high end equipment and complex presses are NOT required. Rotary forming is a great & economical way to make large plastic parts but the main limitation is strength as these are thermoset plastics that...

New Ultralight and LSA Trainer design PAIR 2

Hmm.... why does the Ayerscraft website give a virus alert? Blocked by Avast. I wonder if anyone has used explosive forming for complex aluminium aircraft parts? I've done a little bit of this but not to such a precise degree of repeatability that an aircraft would require. However it can be a...

    Wittman Buttercup

Unfortunately that link doesn't work for me.... and I don't really want to sign up to another forum at this stage just to read the article. Any chance it could be posted here, or is there an article title I can google? Chris

Nice looking Tailwind! I am interested in the pdf article of Wittmans story Mike.... any chance you could post it here or link to it (I found a link on another old thread, same article I believe but it is now dead). Chris

Diesel - someone please talk me out of this...?

PTAirco - that radial diesel looks darn impressive for sure! [This is a little OT] Dan, big end bearings. I was referring to an accident that happened near me about 10 years ago now when a Lyc powered twin became a submarine in which 8 people died. The first engine died when it seized only a...

Diesel - someone please talk me out of this...?

Ok, sorry to wander about (it's what Gnu's do!) but I just came across the website for Franklin aircraft engines in Poland. Anyone know about these.... reliability, cost, background etc? Chris

Diesel - someone please talk me out of this...?

Personally I am more concerned about the Lyc's past of big end bearings seizing & crankshafts breaking than some valve guide wear Dan but if you are running six of them with no problems then I'm probably wrong as clearly you have the experience to back up your position. Also it is likely they...

Diesel - someone please talk me out of this...?

Thanks again folks. So I'll dump the plans to use an automobile sourced diesel engine. So where do I turn if I want 160 - 200 hp (and aren't too keen on Lyc's)? Are Continentals any good? Any other auto conversions that are more simple and economical? I wonder if Jabiru will make a more...

Diesel - someone please talk me out of this...?

Thanks for your wisdom folks! Some goog points about rpm, engine management, cooling and the need for a PSRU which complicates things. I guess all things considered it does look a bit hard. I like the idea of using diesel, would be mostly for bush flying where diesel is readily available and...
