Blended wing ACs are coming !

How will the various components of the fuselage be transported? Where will the productions breaks be.....Not to mention the increased structural weight penalty of pressurizing a pancake. What will the airport gates look like? Are we going to entirely re-design and construct all major airports...

Material for disc brake, laser cut

I used to coach a collegiate race team...long story. Anyway, we had to roll our own brake disks for numerous reasons. Water-Jet or Laser cut disks work well. Make sure to use steel. Stainless is a crap shoot. Some of it isn't good material for brakes (gummy) and tends to gall. Not good. The...

    Communication problems?

Duck tastes best if cooked medium rare...however, you may catch a disease called Psittacosis. A type of Chlamydia......Which sounds a little like piss-attack-osis...(avoid OG Chlamydia...shots don't work as well as they used to. Avoid greasy ducks and questionable watering holes!) Back to...

Exploring possibility of manufacturing Aeromatic prop blades.

The blades are easy enough....the correct glue, a press and a bunch of layers of the "special" wood. Even the machined parts are not that big of a deal. The retention screws however....they are a problem. I have some somewhere. I'll see if I can find them and take a picture.

Whatever Happened to Amazon's Drone Delivery Service?

Walmart is delivering packages by drone in a few of the communities around NWA. I really don't see this being much of a widespread thing though. The range in wind is very small. Payload is very limited. The risk of accidents and liability prohibits large drones. Ground based delivery makes more...

EPA Declares Leaded Plane Fuel a Public Health Threat, Paving Way for Limits

How much longer are the big pressurized twins realistically going to keep flying? I just can't imagine we should base the entire decision on such a small group. Yes, they burn most of the fuel, but these aircraft are maintenance nightmares, and probably the most difficult to operate regarding...

Why is it so hard to be profitable in aviation?

It may make sense for some ideas...but do your homework first. The perceived "moat" is often just a tar pit full of alligators you wind up stuck in. Consider STCs or copyright. The history of patents in aviation is bad...all the way back to the Wright Bros. Plus they expire and require ever more...

Why is it so hard to be profitable in aviation?

A word on "IP" Just don't......forget it. Aviation is a small market. Use the open source model. Publish what you do so no one can patent troll you. Just make sure you are the low cost provider. No one is going to invest the time and resources to copy what you are doing. Not enough return on...

    912 in place of A-65

Another airplane I forgot on my list is a Remos. The 912 is a rattly beast on the ground. The gearbox sounds like a box of rocks. Once flying it's just another engine. Buzz rather than drone. Power to weight is good. Parts are not cheap. I'm not a fan of the hybrid air/oil/liquid cooling scheme...

    goodbye turbulence

Sweet! Probably just RC airplane components and a small processor and code. Obviously need the long pitot/static probe in front of the wing to be able to sense the "bumps" before they hit. The control surfaces are then reflexed to kill the lift during the bump. Active suspension for aircraft...

Why is it so hard to be profitable in aviation?

Many aviation "businesses" that come and go are just investment scams. They were never a business and never meant to succeed. Van's started out already having a sheet metal business and migrated to aviation. Lancair was a guy building a cool plane that grew unexpectedly, same with Rutan. Once...

    Barnstormers sellers non-responsive?

With a single seat blind hot tail wheel.....this is the only option! Not to mention the insurance company won't insure it unless the pilot has time in type.

    Barnstormers sellers non-responsive?

I've had mixed results with Barnstormers, like most folks. It's the Craigslist of airplanes. I have had really good results at times. I contacted a guy in NC about a set of Cessna wings. After talking to him for a bit about logistics, he mentioned a friend here in AR just bought a Cessna to part...

    Spitfire

Probably 6 year old kids who don't even know you can build an actual full sized airplane. Maybe even from a foreign underdeveloped country. You never know who you are dealing with. I find it helps if you imagine you are talking to kids. Avoids many flame wars. Also explains the knee jerk...

Converting standard bolt heads to flush on a sheet aluminum panel lap joint

@wktaylor Out of curiosity, do you have any idea why the slot head is preferred over the Phillips head? Usually slot heads are inferior.

Converting standard bolt heads to flush on a sheet aluminum panel lap joint

No worries, I'm just happy someone knows what those are. ;-). And I meant to type NAS not AN. I just grabbed some stuff out of a drawer that fit the description. The variety of AN, NAS, and MS hardware is truly mind boggling. If you can think of an application there is a fastener for it. We have...

Converting standard bolt heads to flush on a sheet aluminum panel lap joint

AN 16XX fasteners are used for this. Usually for significant structural loads and members though. Sheet can't take much for point loads, that's why rivets are sized the way they are. Screws and bolts are for thicker cross sections and higher loads.
