    Carbon fiber skin

The build is not yet complete, but the intent is to have a removable lightweight carbon skin attached with Dzus fasteners or similar.

    Carbon fiber skin

I have made my turtledeck using carbon. Not sure how much the original would have weighed ( steel tube, aluminium sheet and fabric), but mine weighs about 3 kg. Considering sheeting the rest of the aft fuselage in carbon also, using Dzus fasteners for maintenance access. 2 pies of 212grams/metre...

    Borescope advice?

We use a Panasonic videoscope at work https://www.olympus-ims.com/en/rvi-products/iplex-nx/#!cms[focus]=cmsContent13652 I think it's in the tens of thousands pricewise, and lenses are thousands. it is very good if you are using it professionally but too expensive if it's just personal use. It's...

    Engine choice Sonerai I

Perhaps I need to be more specific and perhaps I should look at which aircraft type they are talking about. The VW is fine for the S1 as you say but the S2 at gross ends up at over 14 lbs/hp. While I build my S2, I'm still flying my 601HD with it's 80hp. It flies well with it , but it has half...

Is your MTOW based on achieving the 45kt stall speed required by RAAus or a structural thing?

That would mean rebuilding once a year for me.

    Engine choice Sonerai I

It is my understanding that they were designed for VW engines and 80hp is about all you can get out of them reliably in an aero application. They don't really have enough finning to get rid of the heat and when you add typical Australian temperatures, it doesn't get any better. Jabiru seem to be...

    Engine choice Sonerai I

I would consider 80hp barely adequate. Can I assume you are familiar with Robin Austin's machine? He has posted information about it here. https://www.sonerai.net/threads/world-record-plane-12-years-on.4975/#post-37851 Where in Australia are you, if I may ask? I'm in South East QLD

What's been your most terrifying experience in flying?

You can make a lot of your own "luck", with some prior preparation. A bit of planning about where you will go when the engine fails, before you push that throttle forward can be the difference between lucky and the worst.

New to the community, from NSW, Australia

Many Sonerai in Australia are on the Recreational Aviation register and won't show up on the CASA site. I have found a few around where I am, but don't know of any in your area.

    Prop for Rotax 912 100hp

You should measure up and see what is the biggest prop that will fit. My understanding is that it isn't the Sonerai that is the limiting factor, it's the VW engine. The E-Prop site has a prop calculator that you can select by speed, engine and maximum diameter. Just had a look at NR props as...

    Prop for Rotax 912 100hp

If you read Robin's information about his later aircraft, he switched from a two blade to a three blade constant speed (airmaster I think). Apparently the was a very small speed trade off for improved smoothness. If you intend using a ground adjustable prop there are many options. I am currently...

VW engine failure on Take Off

There's an inexpensive 912 on Aviation buy swap sell page. Close to TBO but since you're experimental , you can run it on condition. The rotaxes just keep going.

    Taildragger Visibility

It may be a useful taxiing aid, but for judging the flare (or holding off), it's all about peripheral and trying to maintain that while focusing on a screen might just end in tears.

    Hi to low wing mods.

You have it correct.....you need both the new and the old laid flat. The slight difference if you wrap one over the other isn't as slight as you might hope and does shift the holes quite a bit. Variations of your strip cutting idea can work. Polycarbonate sheet works well for templates. You can...

    Hi to low wing mods.

As a Structures AME, I wouldn't use the existing skins, if there is much damage, but it might need a more careful assessment. How do you anticipate CCP rivets will work, if the existing ones were countersunk? They can't fill the countersink. I'm not really sure what you would achieve. Match...
