    Filler Rods and Wings

Welding Rod storage can be pretty easy. I bought a couple of lengths of PVC pipe, 2 or 3 inches diameter, and a hadfull of caps. Cut the PVC into pieces slightly longer than your welding rod. Glue a cap on one end. When its dry, stick your rod in, and slip a cap on the other end. I use a...

    Weld Inspection

The place my nephew works, sends everything thye builde out in bare metal to showcase the welds. Personally I try to show mine with a thick coat of Powder Coating, and no straight edges to compare the parts too.

What filler rod do you use?

Don't limit yourself to TIG rod. ER in the name means that the rod will work for MIG or TIG. You can sometimes find good deals on spools of MIG wire. Just cut it into lengths, and use it. Here is the classic web document on TIG welding Chromolly...

The newer manufacturing processes have a high cool factor. But don't get caught up in the glitz and glamour of it all. When laser burning came out, our manufacturing engineers saw what it could do, and before long, we were laser burning square plates instead of shearing them. Laser & Water Jet...

    problems and issues with plans

First of all, don't expect to get much in the way of computerized data on the plans. Those that have done it for themselves don't seem to be too willing to share, for a number of reasons. Respect for the plans owner, fear of legal action, or the feeling that they did the work, and you can too...

    Landing Gear Bow

Not exactly sure on Sonerai landing gear weights, but... the Pitts guys say Bungie gear is the lightest, spring gear is second, and RV style is the heaviest... at least on a Pitts, and they tend to use RV-3 gear for the single place S1S. So I would guess that it is too heavy for our birds.

    Community Funded Hoerner Wingtips

    I like #2 or #3. 4-6 look too generic.

How about some feedback on my color scheme?

The last one looks really good. The green and white almost blend together when they were side by side.

How about some feedback on my color scheme?

How about putting the white on top, and the black on the bottom?

Flapomatic (with apologies to Hirth Acrostar)

Not earth shatering, but it should make a difference in stall speed. Any pictures of the setup? Or ideas by anyone on the effect to stall speed? Might be the silver bullet for LSA. Eric

Just how anal should I be with weight?

With all due respect. The plans don't specify AN, and judging from the pictures on Great Plains website, they don't use AN bolts either. I am comfortable with my Engineering degree and decisions. If you aren't then dont get in my plane. Eric

Just how anal should I be with weight?

The I for a piece of 3/4 tubing, with a .120 wall is 1.63 X greater than that of a 5/8 bolt. Which would give the Chromoly (63,100 psi) Yield strength than a Grade 5 bolt (81,000 psi), and a higher Ultimate Strength. By sleeving it where it is welded to the backing plate with a piece of 1"...

Just how anal should I be with weight?

If someone could confirm tha 5/8 axles work, I would make my 3/4 axles out of .120 wall chromoly. They would be stronger than 5/8 bolts, and have half the weight. Saving almost 1 pound. Just ordered the parts to make a vacuum bagging system, so there will be carbon fiber parts. Jurgen's photo...

Just how anal should I be with weight?

Thanks Ed. I like that one too. How about the Rudder Cable Guides? I like the ones on the right. I know there are only a few of them, but that's almost an ounce of savings. And they look cool :)

CAD files for Sonerai II parts

I would be interested in seeing the file. As well as any pics you might have of the parts. I plan on doing the jackscrew adjuster too, and want to integrate it into the initial design. Eric

Just how anal should I be with weight?

I've already lost 25 pounds, with more to come. But I still need all the help I can get with the plane... Here's what I came up with. The left one is according to the plans dimensions. 1x1 with the nutplate 3/8 from the edge (6 grams). I did add small flanges on the edges though. The middle...

Just how anal should I be with weight?

I am drawing up the little parts to have cut, but don't know just how far to take the weight issue. Here are a couple of ideas I have for nutplate mounting brackets. I am thinking that the lightest ones would be fine for inspection cover mounting, but the full size ones might be appropriate for...
