    Flying wing for high efficiency

Ya I git it wrong low blood sugar.10 lbs per hp sorry.

new 2011 flugtag entry.. stairway to heaven

As far as making a RED BULL legal Trebuchet goes. If you have the pushers in the bucket and a front wheel a bit in back of the bucket then when the front wheel goes over the edge the pushers will fall. If the airplane is as far in back of the main axel as the pushers are if front of it then it...

    Flying wing for high efficiency

Yes I did say that the drag of the wing’s wetted area goes up with the square of the speed. Not the raea itself. Thank you very much for taking my words out of context. “The drag of the fuselage and the wetted area of the wing” pie_row “goes up with the square of the speed (indicated...

    Flying wing for high efficiency

Did you not read what I said? Can you read? I said that the drag goes up with the square of the speed. Not that the area does. Yes I am ballsy. But I am right and he is wrong. For the same weight of airplane and the same aspect ratio for the wing, a bigger wing produces the same lift at a...

    Flying wing for high efficiency

Hmmm 80kft. I've dreamed about going that high. 45kft is better from a lot of places to look from. The turbo charging is easier. it is above the reduced vertical separation minimum required airspace. etc.

Wing dihedral and gravity fuel feed, where's the optimum?

That is a good way to do it. But if you build a functional model you can find problems before you build the real thing or before you are in the midel of the atlantic and you find out that it doesn't work as designed. Just a thought.

Wing dihedral and gravity fuel feed, where's the optimum?

Why put the fuel pumps in the wings? You need to move the fuel from the header tank (in the fuselage) to the wing tanks. So why put the pump(s) in the wings? Under the header tank is where it/they need to be. :-) The fuel trailer would have the wing area for the extra weight of fuel for...

    Flying wing for high efficiency

Have you read Frank Whittle’s work that lead up to his inventing the jet engine? The drag of the fuselage and the wetted area of the wing goes up with the square of the speed (indicated air speed). The power required goes up with the cube of the speed (true air speed). So a lower indicated...

    DSMA277/-280 foil thickness...a state secret ?

Thanks for sharing the story of going M1+ in a sub sonic airliner. Good stuff.

    Flying wing for high efficiency

I want to fly at best L/D. A bigger wing makes L bigger and so D goes down. You are flying at a lower indicated airspeed. Now if you add more power at a higher altitude you get a higher true airspeed. At 40,00ft true airspeed is twice the indicated airspeed. So if you have an L/D max at...

Wing dihedral and gravity fuel feed, where's the optimum?

On a side note for going Trance-Atlantic why not a fuel trailer? Wings and a big tank. Leave it home when you don't need the tank spance?

Green Flight Challenge - Relevance and Goals

My thinking goes a bit like this. The cost of a small production engine is the same regardless of how much power or how much it weighs. More or less so why not build one that has a good power to weight ratio? TBO Why not build to a 500 hr TBO? At that TBO you could have 1/2 the power...

    High Lift airfoils for UL's

I’ve been doing some thinking about re-drive design. For the DA-15 I’d probsbly run a flywheel with cooling fan built in and a quill drive to a poly V belt. On top of this I’d be running some kind of damper to dampen resonance. I’m well a wear of the need to big props for low speed trust...

    High Lift airfoils for UL's

Using the FAA's charts in AC103-7 I get about 16 HP or so for the limit on a really clean US legal ultralight built the way I want it. DA-150 here we come.

    Flying wing for high efficiency

If you want good fuel economy then you want to fly at best L/D. A big wing helps with this department as well. It also reduces the stall speed, adds rate of clime etc. Here is the thought experiment that lead to Frank Whittle inventing (co inventing) the jet engine. If you fly at an altitude...

Wing dihedral and gravity fuel feed, where's the optimum?

Just a thought or two, Why not pump the fuel around in the airplane? You could set up gravity feed as a backup but if you pump it where it needs to go then you free up a bunch of constraints. Would the top of the fin be below the tanks in the worst clime position? What about putting the...

Green Flight Challenge - Relevance and Goals

Tin hat time. TPTB are interested in getting as much money as possible out of the middle class in America as they can. There is no money in GA. Not like there is in cars. Not like there is in consumer electronics. GA represents personal freedom. TPTB aren’t interested in personal freedom...

    VW cooling

In theory you are correct. Small amounts of water should boil off. With water injection you should be able to use a higher compression ratio that should get you better fuel mileage. In practice running the extra water through the engine reduces the engines life. But it does keep the...
