    Electric SSDR Motor Glider

House move stuff has delayed progress for the last little while. I am still progressing this in slow time though.

    Electric SSDR Motor Glider

Martin, I think you are right in that there used to be a wing loading requirement, though my recollection is that it was an OR not an AND requirement. However this does not appear in more recently published documents. That said I’m trying to track down a definitive doc but surprisingly...

    Electric SSDR Motor Glider

Grelly, thanks, I am aware of the Europa. I think for outriggers I'd either just leave them dangling or retract them with the main. I learnt to glide in the K13, its a lovely old girl. It may be that sweep is required in order to get the cg and structural requirements to match too. We'll have to...

    Electric SSDR Motor Glider

Hi all, I've had a bit of time to read and digest your comments and so here are my thoughts and explanations. Jedi, I am not against pushers, the Janowski J5 I think is particularly good looking. However, for simplicity I have gone with a tractor arrangement here. Once I've got sufficiently...

    Electric SSDR Motor Glider

Wow, thanks for the interest guys. I’ll have to sit down and go through all of the comments fully. As a place holder though, please remember that I am designing for UK single seat de-regulated regulations (slight oxymoron?) and that this is principally an academic exercise - so short cuts to...

    Electric SSDR Motor Glider

Stanislav, I am deliberately trying to push the pilot forward of the wings. I will be looking to have the batteries behind the wing spar somewhere. I take your point on the turtle deck from an aerodynamic perspective, but I really like the aesthetic of a bubble canopy. I guess the additional...

    Electric SSDR Motor Glider

The following is the rather delayed action of my inspiration derived from Topaz' Conceptual Design of an "Inexpenseive" Single-Seat Motorglider. Like that thread this is probably only a conceptual design but is more of a feasibility study than anything else: Is it possible using today's...

    de Havilland wing tips

Ok just need to pop in to point out that the aircraft in posted by the OP is not a: Fox Moth (DH 83) or Humming Bird (DH 53) [dh fanboy mode off]

39th Western Workshop of the Experimental Soaring Association, div. SSA

For those not in the vicinity or continent, is there a webcast or even just copies of presentation slides available?

    A challenge to you all

That depends on your officials. In the UK there is a sub 70kg class which is pretty open. Even still, 50kg really is not a lot of mass budget to play with. More plane really does = more mass.

    A challenge to you all

Not overly common and I’d guess (not flown one) that they’re more cumbersome to operate than PPGs. The PPG backpack is quite a neat “installation”. Improved designs (compared to above) quickly encroaching on flex wing microlight territory.

    Congrats Peter

I’m late to this thread but I followed Peter’s builds on YT. The above might be a description of the best job in the world...

    A challenge to you all

Yup, based on those specs alone, that already exists: powered para/hang gliders.

    Aileron Balancing

Thanks all. A bit of reading to be done to get through that lot! :)

    Aileron Balancing

I have a question regarding aileron balancing and would like to bounce my understanding off the collective wisdom of the forum. I think that ailerons can be balanced dynamically and/or statically. 1. Dynamic balance is done to reduce pilot force input requirements and is achieved by having...

AIR ATOS Wing - 3axis from a trike wing

Single retractable center main. Tail skid on the inverted tail (doesn’t look strong enough for me but apparently is). Lots of detail in this video. https://youtu.be/O8lBpVfIGX0 Edit: perhaps a challenger for motorbike (moped) of the sky?

AIR ATOS Wing - 3axis from a trike wing

This is an interesting concept. These guys have built a 3-axis aircraft using one of their high performance trike wings. http://sustainableskies.org/project-atos-wing-explores-ultralight-electric-soaring Not too sure about spoileron control effectiveness but I think that’s a function of...

Modern day "motorcycle of the air" aircraft class?

That triggered a hitch hikers memory: “CHAIRMAN Yes, and, and, and the wheel. What about this wheel thingy? Sounds a terribly interesting project to me. MARKETING GIRL: Er, yeah, well we’re having a little, er, difficulty here… FORD: Difficulty?! It’s the single simplest machine in the...

    Sub 70

SSDR and sub 70kg are alive and kicking. Sub 70 was intended to be for powered “wheeled” hang gliders, however the letter of the law allows 3-axis. https://www.caa.co.uk/General-aviation/Pilot-licences/Self-propelled-hang-gliders-fitted-with-wheels/ SSDR frankly is just a subset of “standard”...
