    Oldest Aircraft

And yet after they did all that they hid in their bunker and hoarded their knowledge not to come out until others had innovated and produced much better aircraft that were commercial successes and then suddenly they felt left behind and stifled the early aircraft industry by suing everyone over...

    Cheap EFIS finally coming.

I have a Samsung S3 android phone with maybe 5 apps installed which freezes and locks up randomly all the time. Sometimes when I plug in the charger the touchscreen register movements in a mirrored fashion. I'd refuse to fly in any aircraft with an android or ipad flight instrument panel. Maybe...

Leading Edge Plywood - When to Join

You don't want to bend the glued joint. Glue makes things britlle and hard. Either make it so the glued joint falls on a a flat (or almost flat) place, or glue after bending (which I reckon will be very hard to do)

    Commercial use of experimental aircraft

From the website: Virgin Galactic and the State of New Mexico announced that they had reached an historic agreement which would see the building of a state funded $200m spaceport It's not Virgin's money. They can jump ship the instant things don't go their way or have a better deal elsewhere...

    Commercial use of experimental aircraft

Or they can do the launches from outside of the USA and not have to pay attention to any silly rules. I bet many underdeveloped countries in the caribbean would love to have a spaceport and bend over backwards to serve virgin galatic.

    Factory Built Experimental

Why not? My own experimental that is being built in the cheapest way possible (from wood stock) is already clocking up at three family cars if labour and parts are all included and will probably be at around 5 family cars when done. If I were to sell it I wouldn't do it for less than the cost...

    My Osprey-II build

Spar attachment Just the spars being glued in place... Wing ribs All wing ribs done. There are some 'weird' ones with cut outs for the landing gear that aren't shown but are basically the same. Cabin construction The left picture shows one of the cabin arcs just removed from the...

    Quill Shaft Design?

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Let me introduce you to Newton's third law. Engine tries to turn propeller. As a result, it also tries to turn the engine mounts, which try to flip the airframe over, which leads to vibration than might be felt (or not) by the occupants.

    Serial Hybrid

3% sounds right. I'll take a WAG and say about 6lb for a 75kW controller. You should investigate hybrid car powertrains. Try to find a junked Prius to rip apart maybe it would be a decent starting point. Have a look at these papers they might help you (copy paste titles into google and you'll...

    Quill Shaft Design?

If auto cranks were wet noodles I wonder how racing people routinely supercharger and get 3 or 4 times as much power from the engine as it originally had, and when it fails it's always pistons, rods, cams... never the crank. To get a modern engine's crank to fail you have to try really really...

    Serial Hybrid

Can it be done? Sure. Is it wise? No, you'll be losing on efficiency, which is a critical parameter, and losing the ability to have the electrical equivalent of a CVT transmission on your plane.

    Serial Hybrid

My friend this is a rather complex topic and I question your ability to complete such an endeavour when you don't find and read through a pertinent thread that sits on this very forum half screen below yours...

    Propeller Manufacturer sought

It would be trivial to alter a belt drive psru so the output shaft is hollow and has a pressurized oil inlet to feed a hydraulic prop.

    Evaluating Wood Condition

What I would do is pick a couple of the worst looking pieces, so maybe that gusset with the nails, an easy to replace strut and a small piece of plywood and cut right through them. No guessing, no theorizing, no feeling unsafe because you don't know what was there. This way you can check with...

    Motorcycle engines revisited

I actually laughed at that. Pimple faced teenagers will have their bikes crashed out of warranty before the engines reach 5% of their useful life. In actual use their lifetime average powerload is maybe 5%, even to cruise at 300 km/h they don't need full power. In applications that see...

3D Printed Wing Ribs - Are We Almost There?

Why would anyone want to 3D print a flat piece?

    Motorcycle engines revisited

FWIW the folks doing the Bugatti 100P replica are using Hayabusa engines. I assume that's because of size or weight restrictions, though modern motorcycle engines have become very reliable when you get 197 hp at 10.000 rpm I can't really fathom it having a long life at that power output. Good...

    FBW

For that you need to know the frequency response of the autopilot and of the control surface actuators. Autopilot freq response is probably a programmable setting to suit to each aircraft but the manufacturer should be able to give you an idea. For the actuators you can get that data from their...
