What is the "best" auto engine for aircraft use in the 250-350 HP range?

I was planning on ducting some air into the engine bay to deal with that. Oil cooler would be easy to locate as well. Like I said, it would be a design that is assuming liquid cooling from the beginning and could thus account for it.

What is the "best" auto engine for aircraft use in the 250-350 HP range?

Right now, planned 2 seats. The HP is probably a bit much, but I'm a fan of "large engine run at lower throttle setting for reliability". And yeah, I saw that one...that's pretty close to what I'm looking for, but like I said, planned for 2 seats.

What is the "best" auto engine for aircraft use in the 250-350 HP range?

I second that! I was just on their website, didn't see anything about costs.

What is the "best" auto engine for aircraft use in the 250-350 HP range?

Good to hear more good things on the Walter. Regarding cooling the engine, I was planning on a pair of air intakes on either side of the cockpit, a la F/A-18 or similar, with radiators in them. One of the biggest difficulties in auto conversions seems to be cooling, because you're trying to...

What is the "best" auto engine for aircraft use in the 250-350 HP range?

Man, if I had the funds to make that happen (and who knows, when we finally get to build it 20 years from now, I might) I would SO be there. That, or a PT6.

What is the "best" auto engine for aircraft use in the 250-350 HP range?

Hi everyone, My friend and I are working on a one-off design similar to this: Bienvenue sur LH Aviation.com The main difference is that ours is going to be bigger, guessing 200-300 HP, main mission is fast long distance XC. The neat thing about that layout, with the engine in the middle, is...

New airplane design - the two decade project

That's pretty darn close to what I'm thinking about. I'd probably upscale it some, powered with a turbo-normalized rotary or V-6 or something. I like the general layout, the high AR wings (I like the look, would I necessarily like how it flies?), and the prop in the back (again, looks). I'm...

New airplane design - the two decade project

That's pretty slick. I'd probably put more power in it than that though...if nothing else, because I'm a fan of putting in larger engines than strictly necessary because a) it's fun and b) when running with the throttle back (ie, most of the time), engine wear goes WAY down and reliability goes...

New airplane design - the two decade project

Understood. I'm a materials engineer - I did a lot of mechanical testing in support of stress analysts, did basic stuff on college on Ansys to get the idea, but nothing too major. Getting an idea for loadings and whatnot is what I'm expecting to get out of reading. Am I correct in my...

New airplane design - the two decade project

So, the mission I have in mind is basically high speed cross country, IFR rated, capable of high-altitude high speed, so some sort of turbo/super normalizing most likely. As a secondary mission, I'd like it to be capable of "yank and bank" type activities. I'd like it to be a 2 seater...if I...

New airplane design - the two decade project

Thanks for the replies everyone. I like hearing "use 2D CAD" - I'm very comfortable with 2D AutoCAD...and that's about it. And it'll probably end up actually able to run on my laptop. Score! Real quick question, at least the fuselage is going to be steel tube construction. I've come across...

New airplane design - the two decade project

Hi everyone, I just took a new job, moved from the aerospace industry to the can making industry (food cans, beverage cans, etc). Quite the change, but definately for the better from the job stress point of view. As my wife says, "you're happy again!". If you search around the forums here...

    Galloping Ghost crash Reno 2011

EAA Sport Aviation did an article on that pilot/plane in June '11, talking about them getting ready for Reno and whatnot. Wow. CNN iReporter (whatever that is) said that he was 100 feet from where it went down, but the guy had military training and dragged his wife to the ground before it hit...

How to make a building/flying partnership work

Hi everyone, I had been planning on building a Mustang II, but I took a long, honest look at the cost and realized it's out of my league for now. That said, I want to get airborne sooner rather than later with the MII. I've been talking with a couple of friends and we're considering getting a...

    Yet another "which airplane" thread

My 2nd choice is still very cool, and it's going to be a lot cheaper than a full-IFR Mustang.
