How would you win the Sport Racing class/why am I wrong?

R-985 is a wonderful engine, but it won't take the boost. The cylinder/head joint starts coming apart around 37-38". They're too easy to overboost without a turbo! Bob

    Memorial day

Anyone who served wrote Uncle Sam a blank check for anything including their lives. Uncle cashed them. Many for time, many for blood, many for parts. And all too many for their lives. A toast: To absent friends!

Origins & purpose of these books ?

This set is a complete course of instruction for aircraft sheet metal work. Durng WWII, a lot of military vocational training was given in high school and vocational schools so that graduates could be inducted, sent to boot camp, and then to the fleet, without requiring in-service training. A...

    Strength of Scarf Joints

Very interesting article in Sep/Oct issue of "Wooden Boat" magazine. It covers scarf length, and the method of test. As it's written for boat builders , the materials are oak & epoxy. This is the first material I've seen on actual testing of scarf joints, but there may be some info hidden...

    Rubber press forming

The "Me-262 Project" used a HF 50-ton press and a 1"thick steel box 12" x 12" x 6" deep and a soft neoprene pad backed by a slightly harder neoprene pad. and would handle anything that fit within the box up to .040 steel (notched), and, IIRC .063 aluminum (drawn, not notched).

    Ancient and Strange Gliders

The SG-38 was a military trainer with all requirements dictated by DfS for that application. The landing skid is sprung and damped, the CG is adjusted by a purpose-built adjustable ballast system, and the wood sections are heavier than almost any other wooden primary. It also has an...

    A study of aircraft wood

The German book, "Werkstattpraxis fur den Bau von Gleit- und Segelflugzeugen", by Hans Jacobs, has an excellent section on wood and wood testing, with emphasis on European woods. The wood won't care if its used in sailplanes or powered planes;)

    Werkstattpraxis now in English!

"Werkstattpraxis fur den Bau von Gleit- und Segelflugzeugen" by Hans Jacobs is now available as "Workshop Practice" from Cumulus Soaring or the Vintage Sailplane Assn. For the wood aircraft builder, this book is as necessary as ANC-18 and -19, and more useful than AC43.13-1B. I got mine!

    The Cost of Replacement Parts

Re the OP: At $100/hr. shop rate, that's not very expensive for what is involved in making that assembly, and the company making the parts doesn't heat-treat them. Regards, Bob

    Hose and Fitting Reference

AN and JIC fittings are the same thread , cone angle and hex size. JICs are all, AFAIK, Cad-plated steel. They are good for homebuilt hydraulic mules, working models, temporary plugs and caps, and other ground-bound needs. They just don't belong in working aircraft.

    Help! Wooden Spar Repair

If you repair, you will have to modify ribs to fit over the reinforcement plates and make either one or two scarf joints with the joint(s) a specified distance from the strut fitting. With one joint, you will be replacing more than half the spar, and with two joints, doing about three times the...
