    Plan your workshop space carefully

When the wings were first built they probably didn't have the winglets and were 6" longer on each side.

    Question: Glue joints and waterproofing

The biggest concern with wood, as hinted at in the comment, is that wood changes in size with the humidity of the environment. The varnish reduces the ability of the wood to absorb the moisture and thus limits the changes in size. If some pieces are varnished and others are not then the changes...

I would like to host a Central IL fly-in

If you do something in addition, like antique cars, then I would suggest that you make an effort to intermingle the people somehow. We had a show near me that had all the aircraft and cars on opposite ends of the airport and that did not go over well. People who came for the planes didn't want...

What HBA Members are Accomplishing - 2011 Archives

Re: February 2011 - Tell us what you've done this month! Started taking tailwheel training in a citabria and also got to be introduced into acrobatics. Watching the sight picture on video is nothing to experiencing aileron rolls and loops first hand!

Trading load factor for higher gross weight

Understood. Perhaps my question would have been better asked by asking for any data people may have to support deviating from the designed gross weight. I see references of people deviating from the published gross weight on their EAB aircraft but I would not want to do that arbitrarily.

Trading load factor for higher gross weight

It's a super cub replica, the Light Miniature Aircraft all wood LM-5X-W to be exact. I've seen a couple different numbers but 1100 appears to be the official gross weight. I hadn't thought about breaking loads but most of the other considerations had crossed my mind to some degree. Ultimately I...

Trading load factor for higher gross weight

I am looking at a design that has a load factor of +5.5 with a max gross weight of 1100. Is it acceptable to trade load factor for weight without redesigning the wing? At it's very core I would think if a wing could handle 5.5x1100=6050 then the same wing could also handle 4.5x1300=5850. Doing...

    Zenith CH640 questions

Hmmm and here I just thought it was an attention to details on the finishing touches and a good paint job. From looking at a couple pictures it appear the cabin portion of the aircraft in the video has a more square shape.

    Zenith CH640 questions

Yes I had watched that video prior to making this post. That is one of the best done aircraft I had seen on YouTube for the 640. It was also the hardest videos to watch. I certainly hope that wasn't his day job. Chris

A new form of aircraft development; open source?

My day job is software development and we use open-source both as a user and to sell as a product. Open-source does not equal free and free-source does not equal open, though often they are the same. Additionally neither means copyright free as many free/open-source projects carry licenses...

    Zenith CH640 questions

Sadams: It most certainly is not the most elegant looking design however as you mentioned that it has a very utilitarian look and feel. I like the look myself and that is one the things I like about. It also fits my need for something that is larger than 2 seats but not needing to be quite 4 and...

    Zenith CH640 questions

I've been looking at the Zenith CH640 recently. I like the overall stats of the airplane and the fact that you can buy the plans to scratch build. It meets all the other basic factors I would like to see in an airplane as well. I've tried searching the forums and found very few references to it...

A thread for solving aviations ailments

I think part of the problem with romanticizing airplanes is that the world is much smaller than it once used to be. Digital communications and 24 hour news (if you can call it that) inundate people with more than they want to know about the world. I would argue that before these times it was...

Orion, a very thoughtful article. It's clear that in this current economy gimmicks probably are not going to work and now is both the worst and best time to be innovating. I really think LSA and long term marketing are the best practical solutions. I say LSA, having nothing to do with SPL...

A thread for solving aviations ailments

Regarding the electronics and an iPhone that is exactly what I am thinking of. It is my understanding that labor is often the largest expense in producing a product and by producing that includes R&D and all the other overhead. I would suspect that with the avionics the certification...

Mini-bikes for the most part of throw-away compared to most motorized vehicles. If it breaks or you get bored of it you can sell it someone else for a loss and not be bothered about it. Ultralights would seem to me to be the mini-bike equivalent. But I think that brings us back to the...
