Harbor Freight Predator 670 V-Twin Horsepower tests

With regard to free air cooling, I've read that you want the exhaust valve side of the head to be facing forward since that side typically gets hotter. Using the flywheel end for the prop hub also seems like the best idea, and that's fine for pushers, but for tractor config it puts the exhaust...

Industrial engine options for Part 103

With all the talk of direct drive on these industrial engines, wouldn't we be concerned with the fact that they don't really have a thrust bearing that was intended for that sort of load? Of course we're not exactly talking about stump pulling force, so maybe the thrust washer is enough?

Industrial engine options for Part 103

I found this on another forum, FWIW on 1/2VW prop sizes. 45 hp Casler, Tenn 58x24, 2800 rpm, 170 lbs (unloads during climb, rpm goes to 2950) 45 hp Casler, unknown 58x22, 3050 rpm, 180 lbs 78x92 stroke/bore, Tenn 54x24, 3400 rpm, 195 lbs 78x92, unknown 54x24, 3000 rpm, ? lbs 86x94 Casler, Tenn...

Industrial engine options for Part 103

The more direct comparison might be the half VW engines. Those typically run 54" max I think, and the max RPM is probably 3600 or so. I was trying to find the length and pitch for a half VW prop, but haven't been successful.

Industrial engine options for Part 103

This is something I've been thinking about. I'm at 67 lbs for a Predator 670 with all the mods, lightest possible flywheel, and no starter. The Ace drive that might eventually get shipped is 10.5 lbs. Of course a prop hub would be a few lbs, so say maybe 7 lbs difference. That's likely well...

Industrial engine options for Part 103

I'm not sure what continuous HP I'd need. I'm looking for something that's ideally a replacement for the Polini 303. I'm sure they don't cruise at anywhere near their peak 38 (I think) HP. I'm totally fine with liquid cooling as well, but I don't typically see that in the industrial type...

Industrial engine options for Part 103

Greetings, I've been working on a Predator 670 that could be used for a 1/2 VW replacement, but it's still going to be heavier than it needs to be for nearly any legal part 103 design. Maximum weight reduction and no electric starter might get you in the mid to upper 70 lb range with a...

    Universal electronic ignition options?

LOL. For my first RV-8, I built a Rocky Mountain EMS in the hotel room. I had to keep the soldering close to the window to keep from setting off the fire alarm. Good times...

    Universal electronic ignition options?

After as much research as I can stand, I'm starting to think that "smart coil" is just a new term for something that's been around for a long time. It might also be a trademarked name. Either way, connecting a hall effect directly to it will just burn up the coil since there's no dwell control.

    Universal electronic ignition options?

Since it's my day to ask odd questions, would you even need the Arduino for fixed timing? Could you just use a Hall effect sensor that would produce a 5V pulse, and a smart coil that would fire with a 5V pulse? I'm not sure what sort of pulse duration the sensor has and the coil expects, so...

    Universal electronic ignition options?

Warnings noted. The Arduino might be a fun project, but I wouldn't claim it's aircraft quality.

    Universal electronic ignition options?

I was looking at the Speeduino options again, and it dawned on me that a basic Arduino board and some relatively simple programming can do anything we'd need for ignition. There are "smart coils" that operate on 5V trigger levels, so you'd have to level shift the 3.3V to 5V from the Arduino...

    Just Aircraft 103 Solo?

I do like that it has the best type of folding wings, but I wish they would have widened the front to get your feet inside. I had a nice Airbike for a while, and didn't really care for the legs outside. I haven't seen anything that says whether that "base price" is actually a ready to fly...

    Badlands builders/owners near East TN?

Greetings, I need to locate a Badlands aircraft and see if my giraffe like neck will fit inside. They have an owners map that shows someone east of Nashville, North of Pensacola, central MS, and around Raleigh NC. That could be really old info, and their forum doesn't seem to know who those...

    Universal electronic ignition options?

That link for the article gives me an odd error, but I'm pretty sure I know how they work. The only confusion for me is all the different flavors of sensors out there. The pickup looks like the simple coil variety, like what Rotax uses on the 912. Thanks.

    Just Aircraft 103 Solo?

Just received this email update. No word on the Solo 103 yet, but $40k for the Ruckus seems crazy high to me. I'm not even sure from the wording and comments about "builder assistance" that this is a ready to fly price. I guess there are people with all the money in the world, so they'll...
