Thanks for all the responses. I very much appreciate your input. It's back to the drawing board for me. Best of luck with your Ibis, Hans.

    Hello Everyone !

You say that like it's a bad thing. ALL the best people are at least slightly nuts! :D

    Hello Everyone !

I've been a pilot for close to 50 years, now, and always wanted to fly an amphib. Never got around to it for some reason. Came within an ace of buying an old PBY cat many years ago. Guy was practically giving the thing away. Some of the fabric was torn and it looked like more work than I was...

When I finally cleared the USAF, one of the first civilian planes I tried was the Bonanza, as I had heard so much about what a great plane it was. That was a V-tail and I was sorely disappointed. Later, I tried the conventional 6-place version and again was not impressed. Thus, I was never a big...

Thank you, Gunter. What I read sounds like any other aircraft that is pushed beyond its limits. Remember all the V-tail Bonanzas that lost their tails with too much pilot input? I'll try to find the Matronics write-ups you mentioned.

Being a total novice at the homebuilding game, all I can do is read. The designer, Chris Heinz (Sp?) mentioned in an article that he was aware of the possible wing failures, and was going to do some additional testing with an outside engineer. That was in 2007. Anything beyond that is...

Did go to the Zenith site, and in fact called them on the phone. The 601 plans are no longer available, as of September she said. 650 replaced them. Think I'm glad, as there were some (a very few) inflight break-ups of the 601. Wing spar gave, and there wasn't enough left to make a...

    Who wears a helmet, anyways??

We started wearing helmets with the jet fighters because of the very real possibility of knocking your block off in extreme combat maneuvers. Maybe these days they're for ejection, but the primary thought when I was USAF was hitting the canopy with your head.

I think I just fell in love! Anybody have experience with the Zodiac 650, or perhaps its predecessor, the 601 XL? P.S. The tail number is 601, but the Zenith pic says it's a 650.

M14 powered, 4 place high, performance composite.

Not to throw gravel in anybody's gears, but for that kind of money, fuel burn and speed, why not just pick up a Cessna 421? It's pressurized and has 7 seats, too. Not to mention it's a great airplane.

Okay, just went to the FARs and found my answer. All I need is a BFR and I'm good to go. Neat!

I think you'll find that compleat is the archaic English spelling of complete.

Hi, Kevin. Thanks for the welcome. A Sport Pilot's endorsement? Is that required? Haven't really looked at the FARs yet, but thought my AMEL Instr. would be enough without any additional endorsements. Got about a zillion hours and been flying since Hector was a pup. I came within an ace...

Not a problem. I'll see if I can chase it down with your latest input. Thanks.

Tricycle Steering Method: Brakes vs Nose Wheel

I'm going to show my ignorance here: What's wrong with the way production aircraft steer and brake? Toe brakes for individual mains, nose wheel steering in conjunction with rudder. You can't spin the plane in its own length as you could with a castoring nose or tail wheel, but you can turn...

Those are some great sites, Mike. I was pleased to see fat old men still involved in the building process. Makes me think I have a chance. :D I'm not exactly what you'd call a spring chicken, or in the best of shape anymore.

I realize this is way off base regarding what you're proposing, but I wondered if any of the data about the Vought V-173 / XF5U-1 "Flying Flapjack" or "Flying Pancake" might be of interest to you.
