That is definitely one of my favorite youtube videos about homebuilding.

    Turbo charging

The Monnetts at Sonex/Aeroconversions just unveiled a turbocharged version of their aerovee engine. It is still under development, but they are hoping to have it finished and on the market later this year.

Tandem Airbike complete & moved to airport.

Love your bird! I have always liked the tandem airbikes, and look forward to building one some day.

    Is it a Lightning?

Yes. It is an Arion Lightning. It is made in Shelbyville, TN. The plane can be bought complete as an SLSA, built as a sport-pilot compliant homebuilt, or built as a non-sport pilot compliant homebuilt that is faster and has a higher useful load.

Are you going to be at Oshkosh this year, as well?

    Anyone building a Sonex?

I'm building a Sonex from plans right now. I chose it because: 1) I fit well in it. I am a big guy, and the sonex was the most comfortable plane to sit in alone (which is what 95% of my flights and 99% of my flight time will be). It is snug for me and a medium size guy, and I wouldn't even try...

    Fastest Light Sport Airplane?

Actually, it is the engine manufacturer that sets max continuous power, not the LSA manufacturer. Rotax 912s have a max continous power of about 90% (e.g. the 912S has a max power of 100hp with a max continous of 90hp). Infact, power is not the best term. The FAA rules deal with...

There is a Stallion owner who frequents this site. Hopefully he will see this thread.

    6-seat canard homebuilt?

There is currently no canard aircraft that meets your needs. At one point, velocity was considering developing a twin (think mini beech starship). IIRC, this twin had 6 seats, but it never went beyond a scale model stage. The only 6 seat homebuilts I can think of are the murphy moose, some of...

Have any of these features ever been incorperated into a homebuilt?

That was the Ecoflyer LSA. Here is a link to the story about the crash:Ecoflyer LSA Crashes, Company Owner Killed.

Have any of these features ever been incorperated into a homebuilt?

Of course we can't forget the Rutan Defiant. Twin engine, centerline thrust, canard, composite, 4 seats, gross weight of 3,000lbs+, cruise of 170-180knots, and a range of +1000nm (IIRC).

    Solly Melyon

Aren't he and Bill Clapp (a Corvair powered KR2 guy) partners in Aeromax? If I understood correctly at Airventure last year, Bill Clapp is the Corvair engine guy, while Solly is an aero engineer working on some aircraft they are coming out with (they had a composite tub at the show).

    LoPresti retractable wheel pants

That is what I was thinking. On one hand, if you were to take a big engine, tricycle gear RV, 8 knots would be a little more than 4.5% speed increase. On the other hand, considering how well faired RV wheel pants are already, 4.5% by just covering the bottom of the tires seams like a lot. Who...

Thanks, Fred! That is exactly what I thought, but I was not sure.

Was the Sonerai ever "grounded" by the FAA?

Hi guys, For those guys who have been involved with the Sonerai community for a long time, do you know if the Sonerai was ever "grounded" by the FAA? Specifically, I am refering to the early wing failure issues which result in the wing mod. I recall that the RV-3 was grounded by the FAA for a...

    Sheet metal design resources?

If you are looking at how to design aircraft with sheet metal, let me offer a few suggestions. Chris Heintz just came out with a new design book called Flying on Your Own Wings: A Complete Guide to Understanding Light Airplane Design . Granted, he had problems with one of his designs, The...

    Bending LSA rules?

In theory, it is perfectly legal to give flight instruction in an experimental, as long as you do not charge for the plane. In theory, you can charge your student for the instructor time, but give the aircraft time to the student for free. In practice, the FAA can EASILY drop the hammer on...

    simplest/easiest two place?

The double eagle is a nice project. What I especially like about it is that not only does it come with plans, but there are also DVDs, all for $200. If you don't have any woodworking or welding experience, it would be a good idea to go to Oshkosh or Sun n Fun and learn those skills at the...

    simplest/easiest two place?

Most of the folks I know have upped their gross to 1200lb in the normal catagory. Yes, I like the looks of the Waiex more. However, I can only afford to go the plans built route now, so I am more than happy to build a Sonex. The wings were tested thoroughly and the results (with photos) are...

    simplest/easiest two place?

The skins are .025" aluminum. That is about as thick as light airplane skins get, while still being light enough, and flexible enough to skin an airplane. In comparison, the STOL 701 and early 601s use .016". IIRC, the 750 and 650 have upgraded to 0.20" .
