    Horizontal tail not horizontal

I finally got my Gazaile2 out of the hangar after 6 months of constant rain here on Australia's east coast. It hasn't been test-flown yet so I'm going back over everything. One thing I noticed was my all-flying horizontal tail is not level, it's 1 degree rotated to the right. I bought the plane...

    It Broke!

I have been asked by a member here how my Gazaile2 is progressing. Well I've had a bit of a setback and thought it worth sharing here as something to avoid. I've been doing a lot of ground testing at the airport now that it is all complete and the propellor fitted. Everything was good until i...

    Air filtration

I'm interested to know what you guys think about air filters on aircraft engines. The designer of my aircraft tells me to not use a filter on my French turbo diesel. He reckons there is not enough dust in the air to warrant one. I'm not convinced that is true in a dry place like Australia though...

    Propellor Bolts

My propellor mounting flange and prop and crush plate take 10mm bolts. The flange isn't threaded so requires bolts and nuts. Is it ok to use 8.8 high tensile bolts and nyloc nuts or should I use castellated nuts and drill the bolt for tie wire? Should the bolt head face back or forward?

    Autopilot servo

I have a Trio Avionics EZ Pilot which is a single axis autopilot/wing leveller. The servo they use is both heavy and expensive so I am wondering if I can hook up a large RC servo to a trim tab on the aileron. I like this approach as it is basically just adjusting trim so any failure is easily...

    Variable geometry turbo

My converted engine is a Peugeot 1600cc DV6 Turbo diesel. I have just realised the original turbo is variable geometry so hence no wastegate and the actuator electronically controlled. My problem is that I've done away with all the electronics and I'm running a mechanical distributor pump...

    British Airshows Going Ahead

Looks like Britain is going ahead with airshows despite the virus. https://www.vision6.com.au/ch/48209/65621/2857770/CIQDmibchGgVwGLjKs0FQDX3UtwDXuwfbsLG4aC_.html

    Diesel Fuel System Design

I'm a bit late to this discussion but it is of interest to me. My small low wing two-seater (Gazail 2) has wing tanks forward of the spar and the original builder (I bought it as an unfinished project) was intending to run fuel lines straight from the tanks to the distributor pump (diesel...

    Talos Avionics, a good company.

I'd like to give a shout out to Talos Avionics. They had a 50% off sale on Boxing Day so I ordered their top of the range Efis. It got to Australia by DHL then got lost when handed over to Australia Post. DHL said they will take care of the claim and that Talos would either reimburse me or...

    Carbon design under FAR 23

I've been corresponding with Serge Pennec, the French designer of the Gas'aile. I asked him if I could get the plane up to a MTOW of 600kg which is the max in Australia if I decide to register it as an ultralight. The plane is presently designed for a MTOW of 480 kg. The carbon spar caps are...

    Carbon Undercarriage

My plans call for a one piece blade type undercarriage made of solid uni glass. It tapers from 30mm thick at the top to 20mm at the wheel axles. As I have many rolls of carbon tow hanging around I'm thinking I could save some weight by replacing the glass with carbon. I have a resin impregnator...

    Composite fittings

Looking through my new set of plans there are a huge number of aluminium fittings that can be hand made or water cut. Lots of brackets ,horns, hinges, levers etc. I'm wondering about making them out of carbon. I have a lot of carbon scraps that I could lay up and vacuum into stock for water...

What do you think of this wing building method?

I'm pretty close to buying the plans for a plane that is becoming popular in Europe but seems to be virtually unknown elsewhere. The plane is a Gaz'aile 2 http://gazaile2.free.fr/index.php .The plane itself is wooden but the wing is composite. I'm interested to know what you think of this wing...

    Vertical Strip Foam

Has anybody tried vertical strip foam as a method for building a one-off compound curved fuselage? It is described further down in this link- http://www.f-boat.com/pages/construction/methods_sb.html I have plenty of experience with strip planking in cedar and end grain balsa cores but didn't...

    Plans built composite aircraft

Besides the Rutan types I can only find two composite aircraft built from plans, the Vision and the Krsuper2. Are there any others? Both of these designs seam to have petered out, the Krsuper2 plans not even finished, the website hasn't been updated for 3 years. Have any of this design flown...

Seeking expert opinions on my design approach

Hi, I'm new to posting on this site though I've spent many late night reading through the composite threads. I'd like to let you know my experience as it is relevant to a question I wish to raise. I am a multihull yacht designer and builder so I have plenty of experience with most areas of...
