    Fate is the Hunter!

Really enjoying this thread. Thanks for reviving it after 21 years! When I finally got into real money / first job out of school I bought a set of the bantam air and space series books. They’re paperback and have the best cover art. I had read Riding the Dragon as a kid. Made me want to be a...

Good-News Study On Airport Lead Exposure Kept Under Wraps

Our local city council tried to bury a lead study that was in favor of the airport. https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2022/june/15/county-study-found-lead-within-limits-in-soil-around-reid-hillview

    Stretched Quickie? Q4?

I was reading up about the history of Rutan's pusher design configuration, from the Variviggen to the VariEze, to the LongEze, to the Cozy / Velocity. It seems like a configuration that had lots of growth potential, going from a 1 person to a 4 person plane. I think the tandem wing setup of...

That sounds like a really powerful software suite. What are you using?

    Match drilling a mount...

I went back and forth between building a tailwheel or a tri so many times! Titanium rods are expensive!

    Match drilling a mount...

That's pretty genius! I'm glad I reached out

    Match drilling a mount...

Thanks for taking a look. Unfortunately I don't have the old mount. It would have been smart to have kept it...

    Match drilling a mount...

Hopefully these images will help I can remove the Mount with some difficulty but I’m not sure if that will make it easier to match drill. The rod goes up this black sleeve. If there wasn't a hole already in the rod, this would have been very straightforward.

    Match drilling a mount...

I'm trying to reuse an old titanium rod from a Sonex A for a landing gear on a Sonex B. It's already has a retaining bolt hole in it. Now, I'm trying to install it in a new mount. I haven't found a good way to drill into the mount to ensure that the new hole will be aligned with the old hole...

Barnaby Wainfan's OSH 2023 "Low Aspect Ratio" forum video

You don't have to make it yourself. I've previously used premade fiberglass foam sheets for structural applications. They are insanely strong Link: Fiberglassed foamcore

    X-66A

It would be interesting to see how this new design fits into the existing airport infrastructure. I think the newer 787s incorporate folding wingtips for longer wings, but still fit at existing gates.

    Car dollies for moving airplanes?

I tried to use the car Dollie’s on the bd-4. I think they were 5x500. Unfortunately they didn’t pick up the tire. Good thing amazon got good return policy.

    Car dollies for moving airplanes?

Thanks for the pic. What size tires are those? There’s probably some variation in minimum tire size for different brand tire jacks

    Car dollies for moving airplanes?

Thanks for the replies. I should have mentioned that it is for moving a bd-4 project. An old timer is looking to clear up some room and I’m partial to collecting projects I may never finish ;-)

    Car dollies for moving airplanes?

Hello All, I'm getting ready to move an airplane. Given the space constraints, having the aircraft on castering wheels would be really handy. Also, the current tires are a little shot. Since airplane tires are smaller than car wheels and I've heard that some people modified car dollies to...

    Nut plates vs Rivet Nuts?

What makes them become eventually PITA?

    Nut plates vs Rivet Nuts?

Is there a reason to use one or the other? One thought I had was that rivet nuts would leave a small gap since they typically a "proud." However, I've found rivet nuts that can fit in countersunk holes, allowing for a flush mating.

Airplane For Sale Deal of the century lifting body aircraft

It looks very similar to the cad model in the technical paper wainfan wrote. https://wainfan.co/media/pavreport.pdf What happened to this? Does anyone have any more info about this system?

What is the thickest airfoil ever used in an aeroplane wing for lift ?

The Wikipedia website on lifting fuselage says that they are less efficient but give no explanation or citation. I believe it’s because it is esenstially a low aspect ratio wing. Additionally the thickness increases the pressure differential between the top and bottom sides, exacerbating the...

    Propulsion Equations

I'm trying to get a better intuitive feel of the equations that connect thrust to power, especially how diameter comes into play. Below are 3 screen shots from equations I've found throughout the internet. I understand that they are making different assumptions, but after rearranging so that all...
