10 watts per square foot. So about 1 HP per 75 square feet of panel, when the sun is bright.

Torque vs Horsepower vs Props, comparing engines

This thread makes me realize that people don't understand physics. Tony, you need remedial high school physics, toot suite. As a nation, we need to push physics into middle school, and review it again in high school, add some economics to the curriculum while we are at it. SMH

The AIE rotary engine - nice...

You can always put a bridge down the middle of it - I haven't seen apex seal problems on PP 13B's.

    RV3

RV's are quite efficient. My 6A would consistently do 172 knots true at 7.2 gallons an hour at 8000 feet. That's over 27 MPG at 197 MPH! Constant speed prop, modern ignition and plugs all helped, ran about 65 degrees lean of peak.

    Vans C/S upgrade

The nine flies better at altitude and low speeds. They are both great planes. Another to consider is the 14.

    UV protection from paint

Titanium dioxide blocks UV, it and zinc oxide are used in the physical block sunscreens. Titanium Dioxide is the pigment in white paint, and since the pigment is its own UV protection, this is why white paint is the most durable. Silver is the least durable paint color.

ethanol issues with RV tip tanks

Van's stopped recommending sloshing the tanks many years ago due to problems.

    Lithium Batts

Lithium Iron Phosphate chemistry cells have a much higher thermal runaway temperate than any of the other Lithium chemistries. However, any Li-ion cell will rupture if you keep shoving electrons into it; they don't need, and can't handle even a trickle charge continuously like lead acid. They...

    Potential New PSRU Redrive

I almost put a 13B in my RV-6, but i came to my senses. Too heavy, to many risks, and too much additional build time for me. I still think a turbo 13B could be a great option for an experimenter, but the weight is better suited to a larger plane. I really don't see any other auto engines...

    Potential New PSRU Redrive

The RWS redrive was very well done, it could have used better cosmetics. I prefer the helical cut gears for reduced noise, and they work very well in heavy duty truck applications. Here is a planetary gear set from an Allison 1000 transmission, this is the transmission GM uses in its Duramax...

What's a good plane to build for a first project?

Hard to beat an RV for speed, builder support and overall flight envelope.

    Penciling Out an Electric RV-9

You are right, but you mean energy instead of power. There is plenty of power in the electric plane I outlined, just not enough energy to keep it going very long!

    New PSRU Torque Trends

Electric Motor Gearbox Cross posted, this looks like a nice unit, they are not against us using it on an aircraft.

Considering a Rotary conversion, need help

Seal lubrication in rotary street cars is a compromise between emissions and lubrication - the apex seal in particular are dependent on oil injection on the periphery, this was the problem with the RX-8. People weren't driving hard enough to kick on the additional oil for high RPMs. For...

    21st century Volksplane?

This thread is Volksplane, but the engines seem to be a major barrier: Imagine a time when you can buy an engine any size you need, all based on aviation cylinders - open source design of the case and crank for 1, 2, or 3 cylinder versions. Standard Lycoming clone part compatibility means...

    Penciling Out an Electric RV-9

I'm just thinking out loud. I wouldn't build a low range airplane, just speculating. Bob K is right that something that is optimized for lower speeds might be a better fit - that of course is why I chose the RV-9 over the other models, higher AR, more efficient wing, less of a nose-up...
