SGS 1-26 redesign as an ultralight motor glider

Motorgliders have adjustable glide ratios! Just enough L/D to get there! Back in the 1970s there was a magazine called "Motorglider" (I think?). Fournier RF4 and one of the Falkes were the only manufactured motor gliders available at the time, but there were many homebuilt designs of low to...

    Ultra slow flight airplane

Thank you Pylon500! Just the video I was looking for! Daleande and HoHun thanks for showing us the Zaunkönig airplane, it was interesting too!

    Ultra slow flight airplane

Thanks! but its not and ultralight. It was a conventional looking airplane. Engine in front. High wing, normal fuselage with a rudder and elevator. What was unique was it had a high camber high lift airfoil (think something like the old Gottingen glider airfoils). It could fly in complete...

    Ultra slow flight airplane

Hello, I couple years ago I saw a unique experimental airplane built in NZ or Australia in a YouTube video. It wasn't an ultralight, it was an airplane designed to herd cattle. A low operating cost replacement for a helicopter. The design had a Rotax 912 (I think), was a traditional tractor...

    Tax deductible

A local domestic violence shelter sells expensive artwork to raise monies for the shelter. The money the person spends on the artwork is classified as a tax deductible donation. Can I purchase an airplane from a museum and have it classified as a tax deductible donation?

SSSC-2 Higher AR and less drag for better soaring ( mini-powered sailplane)

About the retracting the landing gear: In the Vans Aircraft world there have been a series of questions about adding retractable landing gear to go faster. Aero engineering types have calculated the airfoil shaped gear with the newer pressure recovery wheel pants have reduced the landing gear...

SSSC-2 Higher AR and less drag for better soaring ( mini-powered sailplane)

"Motorgliding" is a magazine from the 1970s that describes the potential of the sport, link below is an archive of old issues, they're an interesting read. http://cfiamerica.com/motorgliding-magazine.html Tasso Proppe and Jack Lambie had a series of articles describing how much fun they had...

    21st century Volksplane?

Just noticed there's a separate thread on Sripol's Mk IV ... sorry folks

    21st century Volksplane?

Peter Sripol's Mark IV This aircraft seems like a great Volksplane candidate. Currently powered by an electric motor, it has also flown with a paraglider motor. Quick simple build. Though limited to local flying in calm conditions, it has a quiet magic carpet appeal.

    Inexpensive solo cross-country machines?

Anglin Spacewalker 2 (later called Warner Revolution). Can be scratch built, or pre-welded kit. Modifying this design slightly would make a good simple airplane for adventure touring. 1. designed as a tandem two seat, fly it from the front seat and convert the rear cockpit and baggage...

    Inexpensive solo cross-country machines?

CluttonFred, I made a similar tour of the US a few years ago, on a modest budget, flying a low and slow airplane for 400 hours. A couple things I learned: The simpler the airplane the better - simplicity aloft is the surest guarantee of happiness on a long unsupported trip. You'll need and...

Design at new version of the Fournier Motor Glider

Fournier RF4, my favorite airplane. Imagine a modern CNC wood kit, just assemble it. I had an opportunity to purchase a well cared for RF4, only to discover I couldn't fit inside the cockpit and close the canopy. Dream Crushed. What a beautiful, versatile, capable airplane. Here's a link to...

    21st century Volksplane?

most of the german built Klemms had 25hp and at the end of their run 40hp. The British built Klemm Swallows had much larger engines ... up to 90hp. The germans made remarkable long distance flights on 25hp versions.

    21st century Volksplane?

The Klemm designs accomplished a lot on low horse power. But I take your point Fred. I’m reading this thread backwards and found Victor Bravo’s quote at #2716: ... focusing on achieving a safe and entry level 3 axis conventional layout HBA with LESS time, LESS materials, LESS fabrication...

    21st century Volksplane?

Germany built 600 Klemm L25s in the 1930s. Tandem open cockpit design, low cantilever wing that also folded for storage. They flew on 40 hp and were apparently popular. Pops VW replaces the small radial and you’re good.

Any RidgeRunner 2/3 or SkyRaider 2 aircraft near East TN?

Kitfox models 4 through 7 are 105-115 mph airplanes on 80-100hp. Seems like a smaller lighter single seat airplane of similar design should do the same for less hp. But they don’t. I fly by myself most of the time, but these single seaters are too slow for useful cross country flights.

Any RidgeRunner 2/3 or SkyRaider 2 aircraft near East TN?

There are several single seat designs in this class. Why are they all so slow? Is it the airfoil choice, or is it a lack of attention to streamlining? Seems like a 100 mph cruise speed, or 120 mph would be even better. What prevents this.

    Flying career for daughter

Best advise I didn't follow from my dad (who is also a pilot). Don't become a professional pilot. Become a professional, own your own airplane, and fly whenever you want. After 30 years of flying professionally ... I wish I had listened to him. Guess which one of us owns a Baron, a Lake...
