    End of reactive era?

I'm going to say that there's something they've missed that's making interference and causing the readings. That said... light sails DO work as a propulsion system without reaction mass, so perhaps there is something to this. Not to the levels that they're claiming, and using the same level of...

Seeing as there's a Shapeways link in the video, he's already using 3d printing.

Well, isn't that the point of testing a new design? To find out what the limits of it are?

Yes. Many low-cost rockets have slightly canted fins to induce a spin. It's very common on sounding rockets: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTfgOYb1Fn8 WARNING: Those of you who get dizzy easy might not want to watch... this thing spins FAST.

BAN ALL DRONES! - Eric Zorn, Chicago Tribune

Lemme see if I can't find that news article from that drone/Robinson R22 collision last month... Aha: Possible drone collides with helicopter in Los Angeles | Vertical Magazine - The Pulse of the Helicopter Industry Most other search results are from UAS forums claiming that the whole incident...

    Opposed piston engine re-visit

Agreed. That's a quite clever design. Should, if set up right, almost eliminate vibration.

WHAT. I don't know whether to laugh, applaud, cry, or run screaming for the hills.

Probably the Black Rock Desert. The FAA sets up a Ground-to-God No-fly-zone out there once a year, usually in September, and lets the guys with the BIG rockets go out and have some fun in a safe an legal manner.

It's Texas. As long as it doesn't hurt someone, they'll probably ignore it.

BAN ALL DRONES! - Eric Zorn, Chicago Tribune

True, but it's been the latest and largest escalation in the issue. SoCal, and the L.A. Basin in particular, has been a hotbed for these problems. I'm honestly surprised they took so long to weigh in on the whole UAS issue. After all, they're flying through the air, so therefor the FAA would...

BAN ALL DRONES! - Eric Zorn, Chicago Tribune

Well, the almighty FAA has come out with a decision: Press Release – FAA Announces Small UAS Registration Rule Basically, if it's more than 250 grams, you need to register it with them. 30 day period of free registration, followed by it being a $5 fee. Honestly, I think that the incident...

Well, potassium perchlorate is commonly used as both an oxidizer for homebrew solid fuel rockets and as a stump remover. It's just a case of picking the fuel that will give you the best specific impulse, while also being easy to handle. Oh, and designing a motor case capable of withstanding...

    Open VSP

To be honest, I'm eyeing teaching myself how to use Creo Elements, which is used by several aerospace firms. No idea what it offers yet, but there is a somewhat free version (needs to have an internet connection when running) that I've installed a while back. Can't remember how or where from...

From what I've seen, not yet. The plan seems to be early next year for the first flight.

    For thsoe contemplating homebuilt spaceships

Yep. The offset center of mass causes the capsule to come in at a bit of a tilt, which generates a small amount of lift, especially above Mach 3 or so. By controlling this lift vector's direction, you can accurately steer the capsule to land within a few hundred meters of an intended target...

    Crashworthiness

Would using some sort of polymer adhesive like an epoxy help with the vibration issue? Or would that make it too springy and strong?

    Crashworthiness

Good point. Take some serious lessons from the automotive industry and how they do impact attenuation. They've spent a LOT of money and man-hours solving many of the same problems you would otherwise have to figure out by yourself. That's kinda why I'm planning on designing the cockpit and...

    Package delivery by drone...

No, just considering the FAA minimum heights and a little common sense about avoiding airports where manned aircraft tend to be far less maneuverable.

Is deep stall even possible on a prop plane?

Because it's putting yourself into a situation where, if you're not extremely careful and aware of your altitude, you could find yourself in an unrecoverable situation. Besides, planes were made to fly, not fall from the skies like bricks. ;)

    Package delivery by drone...

My $0.02? If they stay below 400 feet AGL and at least a mile away from airports and critical infrastructure like powerplants, refineries, hospitals, etc, there's nor reason they shouldn't be allowed. They just have to make sure to yield for manned aircraft, as the UAVs tend to be a bit more...
