    A case for modern airships

Wind and weather are the enemies of airships/balloons. A lot of rigids went down due to weather.

    A case for modern airships

Just finishing reading "His Majesty's Airship" about Britain's last rigid airships, R100 and R101. Both total wastes of time, money, and lives. Some ideas take a long time to die. I can't see a reasonable case for airships over airplanes. Especially in this day and age.

I give up. There are none so blind as those who will not see.

Part availability of jacobs r-755’s radials?

I didn't know what an AT-21 was, so looked it up. That's is some project. If I lived near I would love to help.

    Perfect Rivets

I worked with guys who only used a 4X. I was just too cheap to buy one when I had a perfectly good 3X of my own and the tool crib had 4Xs if I needed one. The odd time that I would need a 9X was a challenge, 3or 4 good strokes on it and the rivet was done. I know what you mean about bucking...

    Perfect Rivets

As you seem to be totally fixated on 2X rivet guns and what you perceive as their usefulness, all I can say is you do you and the rest of us who have a ton of experience in this field will just carry on with what we have learned over the years.

    Perfect Rivets

Thank you sir for putting into plain English the process involved. These are things that I learned over the years and put into practice on a daily basis. I would be proud to bash rivets with you any time.

    Perfect Rivets

You don't use a rivet gun with explosive rivets.

    Perfect Rivets

Sorry, you will never convince me of the merits of a 2X rivet gun. I've used them when nothing else would work in a tight space, but I really don't like them.

    Perfect Rivets

So does a 3X, if used properly. The best rivet set for flush rivets in skins is one with a rubber ring around it.

    Perfect Rivets

Not sure what you mean by 'finish', I'm sure that I've driven more than a million rivets with a 3X. everything from 1/16 to 3/16. It's all in the finger on the trigger. I never used a regulator, that's what a trigger finger is for.
  12. Angusnofangus

    Perfect Rivets

I disagree about the 2X gun. I never got ahold of one that had a decent trigger. A half dozen moderate hits on a 1/8 with a 3X beats the hell out of a 2X at full bore for 3-4 seconds, as that is what it will take.
  13. Angusnofangus

    Perfect Rivets

Funny how I used a 3X gun for 28 years and never had that problem. A 3X gun won't dent metal, the guy on the rivet gun will, though.

    Perfect Rivets

Practice is the key. That said, .032 skin will have a heavier structure underneath than .020 skin, and will use 1/8 rivets as opposed to 3/32 in .020. Assuming you are using a 3X rivet gun it's just a matter of how long and how hard you hit the rivet. Trial and error. Proppastie is 100% correct...

Sold Woody's Pusher by HL Woods

Pretty much the same here, more than 20 years of numb hands. Had the surgery about 30 years ago and relief was instant. Took about a month to heal to where I could rivet again.

The 10 Most Beautiful Military Jets Ever

F-5 gets my vote. I am partial to F-4s, but not for beauty. They are just big, loud beasts.

    Steel vs Aluminum Rivets

What are the Cherry's that you are using? CR3213's are the basic 'garden variety' nominal sized rivets used, they are 5052 body and a steel stem. O/S are 3243. These are button head. If you are using flush rivets it's 3212 and 3242 O/S.
