The perfect gift for someone who doesn't know if they are coming or going?

What, it's a station wagon with the steering wheel in the OMG....yes, that is a very backwards car. I'm guessing it fails every front crush test out there.

Building your own engine? Does anyone do this?

Thread has kinda gone silent, but here's something to add. I don't remember who, but someone was thinking about a radial engine made with VW cylinders. I think it's a pretty nifty idea. To add to the idea, would a motorcycle crankshaft work as the crankshaft for this or is the geometry wrong...

    Prize Money

Some interesting stuff here. Opposing piston engines are pretty well known - I know at least back to WW-II time, they were used on trains and submarines. Some good ideas where through, I really like the design with the valves on the cold side of the piston. Observation - earlier one it was...

Part 23 rewrite - an I reading this right?

Disregard - I was reading part 23 rules....I knew something wasn't right. Briefly, I saw rules which said that engines for level 2 aircraft or higher (more than 1 passenger) required certificated engines. But that is a part 23 rule, not a homebuilders rule.

Need advice how to sell partially completed project

Advice - provide clear builder documentation for what you've done up to now. Without it you'll never get this sold.

Has your land lord asked you this?

My take - the landlord is looking to run project out of his airport and replace them with airplanes which will buy his expensive gas. He makes more money off renting a hangar and selling gas than just renting a hangar. Follow the money.

Building your own engine? Does anyone do this?

Engines are expensive...so it occurs to me to ask...does anyone make and build their own engines? I have an idea of the level of skill involved and maybe it doesn't make sense to get something that you're willing to fly behind. But is it possible? I know you can get kits to build engines and...

    Twisted in circles

Ok, 2.5 hours...wasn't remembering well. Let's just say an ability to get there faster than I can take a flight with SWA - their flight is 1:40 but after the extra time dealing with the airport, it's about the same. Regardless - I want to build and I want to fly and I keep going in circles...

    Twisted in circles

Ok, I'm still going back and forth on the right airplane for me to build. I've gone back and forth as missions change First, an Airdrome Aeroplane to break the ice and get up more quickly and just be able to fly. Money is tight and even tighter this year. I have spent enough on medical this...

Is There A Trick To Sealing Hydraulic Fittings

You might also consider the difference between a leak and seepage. In my history with naval hydraulics, it seems like you could get some of the fittings to hold all of the times and you can get all the fittings to hold some of the time, but you'd never get all the fitting to hold all of the...

How do you smoothly cut sheet aluminum?

Question - isn't this what the green and red snips are for? The curl depends on the direction of the blades, so if the wrong one is used you'll curl your finish piece. If the correct one is used, you'll curl your scrap. Or am I misunderstanding the red and green?

Any cool aviation things to see/do near Las Vegas?

Aviation thing near Las Vegas...I dunno, there's that whole "Flying over the Grand Canyon" thing, if you can call that aviation related. Sky Combat Ace | Ultimate Extreme Adventure | 888-494-5850 Call up the Shelby museum and get in on a guided tour. It's a good story even if you don't like...

Van and Flowscan in the Crosshairs of a Lawsuit

Which brings to mind an element that hasn't been talked about. Even after the builder messed up the fuel system, he, as the pilot, also caused the crash by stalling at low altitude. Without that, we get an engine out that lands in a parking lot and nobody every hears about it.

Van and Flowscan in the Crosshairs of a Lawsuit

Lawsuit filing at http://media.oregonlive.com/pacific-northwest-news/other/experimental.crash.suit.pdf The family is alleging that the entire practice of selling kits is a problem because of a "loophole" in FAA regulations and that the fuel transducer was defective. Factually, I think it's...

Aircraft Carrier: Anyone else ever worked on one?

Had an uncle on the Forestall. He didn't talk about it. Otherwise I was on a submarine. We "sank" several carriers over different times.

Fastest Kit Aircraft I can Buy Now

Doesn't the Viperjet have just one completed build so far and requires a type rating to fly? It was in Kitplanes this month, wasn't it? 380 kts, but it's a steep hill to get there. And a lot of money. I keep dreaming about something built around twin TJ-100 engines, but that's 80 gph that I...

Building from copied plans? Ultra Pup

When it comes to the built airplane, the original copyright holder of the plans has absolutely no ability to control what you build or what you do with what you build. With regards to the plans, your answer IS copyright law, a piece known as the first-sale doctrine. Once you purchase the...

    Double vacuum bagging

This is the way I understand it too, that double bagging was for ugly molds. The first bag is formed over the mold and the first bag really becomes the mold for the rest of the process. I've give the caveat that I don't actually do vacuum bagging but I'm familiar with the basic process.

    Name this girl!

Name it after your wife. She'll be able to brag to her friends that she has an airplane named after her.

Hybrid light aircraft - Why no one did try that?

As a comparison - the Telsa car has what is probably the best battery system existing right now. They report about 4-6 hours of road time on a charge at varying speeds, but their battery weighs around 1200 lbs. For most small airplanes, that's at or near the entire useful load. There have...
