What is the "best" auto engine for aircraft use in the 250-350 HP range?

Over 400 ft.lbs from 3800rpm (ish) to 5400rpm (ish). Even at 4800rpm you'd have about 400hp. Probably lose a bit with short straight stack exhaust but a SAL would rattle right along with that power. Just need a reduction drive that'll take the torque over the long run and designed with an...

What is the "best" auto engine for aircraft use in the 250-350 HP range?

No worries, I sent him an email last week so I hope to hear back from him soon. I'm looking at options for a SAL so a bit of a different beast to the Titan, slightly smaller but designed from the outset for a 258mph Vne. However, it's all too easy to end up over-weight (most V8 options...

What is the "best" auto engine for aircraft use in the 250-350 HP range?

Ross, Any idea what Titan crowd is actually getting out of the Honda J35 engines with the 2.26 reduction drive? 3800rpm and 23" at cruise gives about 10gph, which by my simple math means approx 130hp (sfc .46 lb/hr/hp). The stock J35 gives 247-265hp at 5700-5800rpm (depending on version)...

    Building a twin mustang

Try the SAL and modify the 2-seat fuse to fit. It's about 80% if modified and with wood the modifications would be easier. Good basic wing structure too, you'd just have to modify the profile and add the centre section. Just my 25c worth. Stew

    Thielert going bankrupt?

Cessna will love this. They're taking orders for their diesel Skyhawks already.

    p51 tail section

Having surfed through several of my Mustang books, I can find TF photos from the '40s showing both normal and tall tails. I guess you can build whatever combo you want and probably find it was done on an original NA Mustang first. Stew

    p51 tail section

Olen, I guess I didn't look that closely intitially. I just got my info pack yesterday and have been reading and digesting. I think that I didn't notice because the tail chord has been increased too so doesn't have the tall and pointy look of the TF-51. Just dreaming as I complete my log...

    SAL Info Pack

Just got my SAL info pack yesterday. More than enough to get me enthused and distract me from work/wife/house/changing the brakes on the car/etc. My better half has said that I need to sell my sports car before I'm allowed another project. Considering she hasn't told me to sell the bike too...

    p51 tail section

Looks very nice. Has anyone put a taller tail on the 2-seat SAL? Stew

    NACA 747A315

Hijack away. I quite enjoy these tangents. Thanks for the help guys. I got a print out from the NACA document and it's got more than enough for me on it. Stew

    S-51

Further research has revealed that the SAL wing was designed to a structural limit of 300mph and the rest of the airframe 275mph. The Vne has been set at 258 to give a safety buffer but the prototype was test flown to 275mph. Stew

Seaplane vs land plane speed difference

The problem with fast float planes is that drag goes up with velocity squared, but power goes up with velocity cubed. Turn that into fuel burn and things don't seem rosy. You've really got to want to play in the water to go that route. I want a fast land plane for going places and a...

    ultralight airplane, seeking info

If you need 10-12 hours to be "truely" solo in an ultralight, then I'd look carefully at the training. I'm a military helicopter instructor and we often send guys solo in a single turbine helicopter in less than 12 hours. If you have an instructor that hits the basics straight away and...

    Cross Country??

I've got an RAF 2000 at the moment, but want to build a Challenger as soon as I can get my RAF complete. In Canada, we can now get the 17 USgal tank so if you're in a clipped wing and plan the trip, you can probably cover a lot of miles in a day. Of course there is the determination bit. If...

    Small Block Ford

Gents, Is anyone out there flying a Small Block Ford? I know Fred Geshwender started off with Cleveland and Big Block Ford conversions but wondered if there was anyone out there using a 302/351 Windsor based setup. With the explosion of Windsor performance parts in the last 20 years...

    Autogyro Flying Boat?

It's French old boy. Whilst I shy away from those cheese eating surrender monkeys in general (Je regret pour le Francais ici), their homebuilt aviation sector is well supported and organised. Besides, despite the banter, some of them are OK. I'd love to put floats on my RAF. Sounds like...

    Original SAL for sale

In case anyone is interested, the original SAL prototype is for sale. Search for SAL P51 on Google and you'll find it. I think its on barnstormers.com. 12 hrs SMOH but needs some work to fly apparently. Stew

    NACA 747A315

Thanks guys. That is exactly what I'm looking for. Any idea where I can find out information on the Roncz section used on the FEW/Legendary Mustang? I'd like to compare the two as they're being used on very similar aircraft. Stew

SAL Mustang vs FEW (Legendary) aerodynamics

Hello all, I've been researching a SAL Mustang project for some time now (info pack in 1989? I was 16 at the time, hence the time span). However, I'm using one of my old university programs (performance estimations) to dive in a bit deeper before I buy plans. Essentially, I'm filling time...

    NACA 747A315

Gents (and Ladies), I'm trying to find out some specifications on the NACA aerofoil used on the SAL Mustang. Does anyone know where I can find some Cl and Cd charts for it? Stew
