force one prop hub seal leaking

The front of the case is welded up and machined so that the Force One is supported in both the #4 bearing area and where the slinger ring fits. The front seal is mounted in the front of the bearing. There are a few good photos of the assembly in the case in the Great Plains Assembly Manual.

    Fuselage side bending question

The Sonerai II Original used the red-blue line, and that’s the way I built mine, which does keep the top longeron flat. It makes it easier to assemble the fuselage cross-members when the fuselage is upside down on the build table.

    Fuselage side bending question

The intent of the drawings is to bend the fuselage sides at your two red arrows. I would install the horizontal rear spar support tube after the bending is complete.

    Attn all VW users

Both of the engines that I had in my Sonerai IIL exhibited the sooty intakes that you describe, and they both ran very well for more than 1600 hours of running time. The first was a Monnett 1850 and the second was a mostly-Great Plains 2180. Both had dual-port heads, and I ran 100LL in both...

    Tail wheel for original cast

The McMaster-Carr #8369T5 and the Aircraft Spruce #06-01665 are similar.

    Tail wheel for original cast

The 4” tailwheel I used to sell was a Darcor W-64-XD. The tread width was 1-3/8”, the bore size was 3/8”, and the width at the hub was 1-1/2”.

    Stabiliser longeron Sonerai 1

The horizontal stabilizer spar is made of two pieces of tube. The outer tube is 1” x.058” wall x 48” long. The inner tube is 7/8” x .065” wall x 24” long. The inner tube is slid into and centered in the outer tube. When the outer tube is welded to the top longerons and the rear diagonals, the...

    Plan question

Standard engineering drawing practice is to look down at the top, and up at the bottom.

    Sonerai 1 plans

What you have is a complete set of Sonerai I plans. There are no large format drawings. Also, the construction manual and the wing construction manual are targeted at the Sonerai II and IILTS, so you will need to only use them as a guide while following the drawings. Several years ago, I...

    VW used by Sonerai builders

I had two different VW’s on my IIL. The first was a Monnett 1850 Econo-V with an Electro-X mount and a press-fit prop hub, 10 amp alternator, Slick 4216 mag, no starter, a Great Plains secondary ignition, a top-mounted stock VW oil cooler, and a HAPI Ultracarb. The second was a mostly-Great...

    Revmaster Engine Mount 2LS

Given that the Sonerai II, when built to the plans, does not have a separate engine mount (the engine is mounted directly to the front of the fuselage with aluminum spacers), I don’t think that you’ll find any information about a separate Revmaster mount for your airplane. You’ll need to copy...

    Cannot see what that is...

Phil, the paragraph in the Sonerai Builders Manual that you are questioning refers to the installation of a “balance” tube between the two intake manifold head castings on a Great Plains Aircraft Supply VW conversion engine. It describes the installation of a fitting in each manifold casting...

Sonerai 2 LS – Wing Sparbox Attachment to Fuselage

The four AN5 bolts and their related bushings are all that is required. No other reinforcement or additional welding is required.

Wagabond, any builders with good or bad

Matthew, there is no significant structural difference between the Traveler and the Classic other than the heavy plywood floor which allows one to sleep in the Traveler. (My airplane does not have this floor.). If you were to install an A-65 Continental and no electrical system, you could save...

Wagabond, any builders with good or bad

If you are talking about the Wagabond (no 2+2), you could license the airplane at 1320 lb gross, but you would really restrict the useful load. My Wagabond Traveler weighs 881 lbs empty. It has a Lycoming O-290-G with Slick mags, Skytech starter, oil cooler, and a Sensenich wood prop. If I...

    Identifying a 2s by photo?

Difficult. The folding mechanism requires a support bracket to be attached to the main spar at about the 3/4 span location, and another about a foot outboard the root rib. It can’t be done without uncovering the wing.

    Taper Pin Installation

Don’t make this harder than it is. The taper pin is placed in the hole and lightly tapped into place. You should have about 1/16” of the pin sticking out the small end. Use taper pin washers on the threaded end, and tighten the nut just enough to keep the washer from turning. Do not tighten...

    Identifying a 2s by photo?

Based on the distance from the leading edge of the wing to the back of the cowling, it appears to be a “stretch”.

SONERAI 2, what's your indicated stall speed?

Do not believe the 45 mph stall speed spec. I built my IIL from 1976 thru 1986, and flew it for the first time in 1986. I flew it for 34 years. During that time I edited and published the Sonerai Newsletter for almost 14 years. In all that time, I never heard anyone claim an actual stall...

SONERAI 2, what's your indicated stall speed?

I don’t believe there is a built-to-plans Sonerai II that stalled at any where near 45 mph. Most stall at 55 mph or higher. My Sonerai IIL at 900 lbs gross weight stalled at 58 to 60 mph IAS. The only way to obtain the stall speed that you are shooting for is to increase the wing area, and...
