    Horrible news from Vans Aircraft

When I got interested in building my own aircraft the advice from those who knew more than me at the time was to find some way to buy the whole kit or accept that you might be an orphan. Homebuilding airplanes has always been a risky business. Most manufacturers have not lasted long. Look...

    So british modified design

Looks good! Might need a little more wing area to qualify for microlight rules?

Drill it only or ream after

If a bolted joint is transmitting any significant load it should be reamed - basic engineering practice. But that is likely on a small number of joints on a homebuilt aircraft.

High build primer for composite aircraft

Have you tried regular gelcoat? The glider people use T30 or T35 gelcoat and then 2K acrylic paint over the top.

    Composite prop for RV3

I believe GT Props also produces a ground adjustable prop, probably has wooden blades. The most significant difference between Sensenich GA and Whirlwind is the pitch setting method. Sensenich uses a "pitch pin", insert the pin into a hole in the hub corresponding to the desired pitch, slack the...

    1/2 scale warbirds

Sorry to be a little late to this party, I started out as a stability & control engineer and always wanted to build a small scale Hurricane. A much wiser colleague advised it was the wrong aeroplane to start with as the original was barely longitudinally stable (to obtain a good turn rate) and...

    Boat fiberglass on aircraft?

I would ask why use "boat" fiberglass? Airplane fiberglass is not expensive, I bought a 100m roll 280g/m^2 92125 a few weeks ago for around £2.50 ($3.00) per metre.

Will there be a US option for non-transponder ADS-B?

Some care with the terminology would be helpful here, In ADSB the B is for Broadcast, not the 2nd iteration of ADS... ADS C is ADS Contract (contract established between aircraft and ground station). The box sends out aircraft position (etc) every few seconds, anyone can listen. FAA is very keen...

    CNC vs laser cutter

According to YT around $2500 to $3000 is the minimum for a sensible set up where the machine is sufficiently rigid to to produce reasonable accuracy/repeatable parts. We spent $6K at work and got a very rigid 600mm x 900mm machine that came with a licence for one of the CAD packages and G code...

The difference between winglets and higher a/r

Also gliders are constrained by class rules (Standard, 15m, 18m, 20m) so winglets give increased effective span while remaining legal. Makes packing the wings into a trailer a real pain - many vertical parts have to be removable which just makes the tip manufacture more complicated. I wonder if...

Another speculative thread - adding forward sweep to solve CG problems

OK, have it your way ... It doesn't matter to me what you believe. What you have written is accurate but not the whole story.

Another speculative thread - adding forward sweep to solve CG problems

Its not about the tip. Vortex theory says there must be a "vortex ring" for any surface to create lift. Its not optional. With no vortex ring there is no lift. I'm dredging this up from the depths of my memory and don't recall the details - I'm a few decades out of college!! The vortex ring...

EAA - For better or worse

I'm not about to attack any individual and have my own reasons for using a pseudonym. I've been a member of EAA for over 30 years. For most of those years the only benefit has been the magazine; there are no local chapters. The website has some good information, but I rarely search it now. I...

Another speculative thread - adding forward sweep to solve CG problems

I will also take the bet!! Before going to the trouble of making models (how will you measure if a vortex is present of not and the magnitude of lift created?), search the interweb for theories of why wings produce lift. There are at least 3 different basic theories (pressure differential...

Another speculative thread - adding forward sweep to solve CG problems

Vortex theory says there must always be a ring of vortex if there is lift, so no vortex = no lift. The vortex can be controlled but it cannot be cancelled out.
