I have built the dorsal fin. It was a bit tough to get right. This did not come in the plans or templates, just like the vertical fin. I would had to have made a poster board template but, I went to the Hummel gathering and Terry, the owner let me copy a a part from the kit and that gave me the...

I took the pattern off of the tail and transfered it on a sheet of .016 aluminum. I did this with about an extra inch on each side. Then cut it from the aluminum and located the center line. I then tapped the sides, prepping for the bend. I then spread 4 mill plastic on a 4x8 table...

I went to my hanger today not to build, but to clean. I made a huge mess yesterday and had to clean off my benches. After I put the tools away and took out the trash I decided to get a little bit done, rather than waste a trip. I gathered some poster board stock last week from Walmart. I taped 3...

It has been a while since I have had a chance to work on the UC. You know life got in it the way. I do have some work to post so here it is . I built the vertical stabilizer spar and doublers. I also built the rudder hinges and doublers. I have solid riveted the spar to bulkhead "F", I also...

    Ultracruiser Build

I cut out and installed the top doubler for th bulkhead "A". It gave me a chance to use some of my new tools. I am very happy with the results and glad I went with the dimpled rivet way. I used the rivet squeezer for the bulkhead and the C Frame Rivet Tool for the doubler. They both worked as...

    Ultracruiser Build

I have been sitting on my hands for a bit before I start riveting the airframe. I have been going over the plans to make sure I have not forgotten something. While in this waiting and studying state I have been in contact with a friend, Dennis from the Ultracruiser Yahoo group, he has built and...

    Ultracruiser Build

Well I have been out of the game for a while. Partially due to general life duty. The rest of the time was dedicated to a used truck that had to be purchased to replace my old truck that was totaled in a accident I was in about 2 months ago. So much about life... I built the instrument panel...

The rear doublers for the horizontal stabilizer were a bit trying just because they required me to disassemble the fuselage.

    Ultracruiser Build

I have been busy but have not posted the little progress I have made. Allot of drill, disassemble, deburr, assemble, drill some more and start over. So this is what Ive done... I installed the rudder and elevator guides on the bulkheads, they are the little white things on the bulkheads...

    Ultracruiser Build

It has been a while since I have posted, I had a bump with space needed to build. I found myself spending a bunch of time lifting and lowering the fuselage, then having to set it up level I felt was leaving space for screwing something up. I was going to move it all into a communal hanger space...

there is more... i needed to put a shelf under my bench and make a couple of saddles. So this left me with just enough time to install the skin from A to B.

    Ultracruiser Build

B to C skin is installed. To put it simple, I stretched the template over the fuselage and then placed it over the raw material, .020 6061, and marked the dimension I needed. I then cut the material out. The fuselage was flipped over and I drill and clecoed. After all was fitted the skin was...

    Ultracruiser Build

Not much to report we had a power outage for 2 days and had to deal with that. I did get some time though. I was about to cut the skin for B to C bulkheads and looked at my cleco supply, found that I was down to my last 50 of 3/32 clecos. So i stopped and removed all of the skins from C to F and...

    Ultracruiser Build

Okay it has been a while since I posted. It is not for lack of working, but problems put a stop to progress. First problem one of the templates I ordered was not to scale. I did notice this before I cut any material but I thought I would have a go at it with my own template. Yep that was a bad...

    Ultracruiser Build

I started with a set of Hummel's templates for the fuselage, one thing I would like to note make sure that you check before you place any template on a sheet of aluminum and cut or drill. I was told that one could cut the material a bit long at the bottom seem and form a funnel then drill and...

    Ultracruiser Build

Not a whole lot to brag about today. My prop showed up this week, looking pretty sweet too. I decided to work on the prop hub and the squash plate. The prop hub for the Subaru Robin engine uses a straight pto shaft. So at the advice of Valley Engineering I am using a taper lock sprocket. Seen...

    Ultracruiser Build

Got the stringers and side rail built. Those side rails were difficult. The plans call out a 104 inch radius, I ended up using a 52 inch radius to get the proper bend. The inside of the cockpit will be about 25.5 inches wide.
