    Rivet nuts in tubes?

Stress adjacent to a hole is about 3 times as high as nominal stress in surrounding material, hence the danger of fatigue cracking, especially in the top longeron which is normally loaded in tension. Would bonding the skins using an appropriate adhesive be practical?

Jabiru 2200 for a Baby Ace?

I have a Sonex running a very early Jabiru 3300 (Serial 116) which is up to 450 hours and giving good service. I have 4 friends with Jabiru 2200 powered Sonexes. Three of them have had good service from their engines but one had lots of problems and eventually replaced it with a Cammit. I...

Unleaded Avgas Availability in Europe, Australia?

I'm not aware of any unleaded avgas in Australia. A few (very few) airfields have mogas pumps, but not enough to be a reliable source on trips. It's 100LL or nothing.

3D printed fuselage exterior surface, reinforced with CF inside

Here's a company that sells the files to allow you to print flying models: https://3dlabprint.com/shop/ And here's a link to a youtube video of one of the models being flown: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDppqGm-x0I All of which makes me wrong. I print various non-structural parts, mostly...

    3D Printer build

The parts you have printed look pretty good. I don't think you should be too concerned about difficulties printing nylon. I found it easier to use than ABS. I think the trick is to dry out the filament before printing because nylon absorbs water from the atmosphere and the water will boil off...

    G Meter and Readings Experienced.

I fly a Sonex fitted with a G meter just because I was curious about what sort of loads I was putting on it. During normal flying I rarely see more than 2g but I did hit thermal turbulence one time that felt like hitting a wall followed by a negative g that had us stretching the seat belts and...

    Recommended Aviation related movies thread...

You could try "Flight of the Conchords" although it's not quite as aviation centered as you might think.

What's a good plane to build for a first project?

As Dana said, it depends, so here's a plug for Sonex, because I think it's not a bad first project and it's aerobatic capable. Pros - strong airframe, all pulled rivets so can nearly all be done by one person, good performance, pretty high Vne, two seats, great fun to fly reasonably easy to...

    Taper pin question

Since they just form an anchor point for the springs, how about having a plain drilled, or better reamed, hole with a long 3/16 bolt going right through? If you are worried about the bolt moving around Loctite should locate it well.

Vulcan Jet -Mad project or been done before?

Probably still a mad project, but how about a scale ed down Avro 707 research aircraft. They were already fairly small and rather pretty aircraft. Follow the link to see the interesting fate of one of these aircraft: RAAF Museum: Behind the Scenes: Storage & Handling

    Countersinking Lexan

Hugh is right about sharpening the drill as for brass, but for the type of countersink cutter you are using, an easy way to do it is to blunt just one of the cutting edges Just "touch" it with a grinder. The drill can then only cut on one edge and can't cut any deeper than the difference...

    Corby Starlet CJ-1 discussion thread.

Hi Mike, there are four Starlets sharing one hangar at my airfield. Most of the Starlets built in Australia now are fitted with Jab 2200 engines and go like stink. I think that to fit the lighter engine they are built with the wing about an inch further back, so it's not a retro-fit thing...

    News of the Day:

The Emeraude is a good looking aircraft. There was one hangared at the airfield where I learned to fly, but it was known locally as the "Hemorrhoid". Peter Sonex 894

    Horns/Sirens on airplanes

I have seen an ultralight in Australia that was fitted with a horn. The owner claimed it was useful for clearing kangaroos from farm airstrips. I would have thought that a low pass would have the same effect but I suppose that any extra noise would help. Peter Anson Sonex

aircraft Bolt 8.8 grade european brands

I'm not European, but 8.8 grade sounds like a common industrial bolt, tensile strength 800 MPa minimum ultimate strength and 0.8 x 800 = 640 MPa proof stress.

    Alternative woods.

According to Wikipedia there are 739 species of Eucalypts. They certainly have similar wide range of properties. A species that is sometimes used in Australia is Hoop Pine which has similar properties to Douglas Fir. It's used extensively for making plywood. Makes nice propellers. Usual...

Marks in 2024 bar stock - what are they

It looks to me like exfoliation corrosion - corrosion along the grain boundaries (Google it). You need to get rid of it. I have seen it go 2 mm deep on 2024 and 7075 bars that have been stored for very long periods, 30 or 40 years. At a workplace we had large quantities of 1" round bar that...

    Sonex / Onex / CH650

Going back to the original question of this thread: The CH650 looks like a pretty good aircraft and if you need the extra room, that is probably the way to go. The Sonex is great fun to fly, roomy enough even for fairly tall pilots, though not for a wide pilot and passenger, and if build it...

    rubber pressing parts

At the time I pressed my Sonex ribs, Peter Carr was pressing all the wing ribs for the Gippsland Air Vans, now Mahindra Aviation Air Vans. That's an 8 seater - a bit bigger than a Sonex. I don't think he is still doing them, but did for the first 100 or so aircraft. There are a few photos of...

    rubber pressing parts

Sheet rubber is available from several suppliers in Australia. Just Google "sheet rubber suppliers australia" and several will pop up. One is Reglin Rubber. Their catalogue http://www.reglinrubber.com/pis/Reglin%20Product%20Brochure%20-%20Sealing%20&%20Industrial.pdf lists rubber up to 50mm...
