DA-11 no longer in Midland Museum.

I’m surprised the DA-11 was ever at the Midland Museum… it really doesn’t fit with their theme. The last time I saw the DA-11, it was sitting forlorn, tied down outside at Apple Valley Airport (maybe 10-15 years ago?), with its prominent “Mower Power to the People” noseart on it.

Just how fast was the SR-71?

As a long time Saturn V fan, I agree. However, I think the numbers for the new SpaceX Starship and booster might eclipse the Saturn V by a significant margin.

Just how fast was the SR-71?

You may be right. I was throwing numbers out from old memories, so I probably got something wrong, but I do remember the F-15 beat the Saturn 5 to some of the upper level altitudes. Thinking about the numbers I quoted, I suspect the the comparison altitude was probably between 60k’ and 80k’...

Just how fast was the SR-71?

A stripped down F-15 Streak Eagle was able to reach 98,000 feet in 3 1/2 minutes, a little faster than the Saturn 5, but again the Streak Eagle was kept light while the Saturn 5 does that with a full load of fuel and luner lander aboard. A straight vertical launch rocket will quickly reach and...

Just how fast was the SR-71?

Sled pilots have told me that the turbo-ramjets gained thrust with increasing airspeed, so the pilot had to restrict the throttle to avoid overspeeding. I can’t remember the exact number (might have been M3.3), but Kelly Johnson told me that they chose to restrict the (suggested) max speed to...

    Asymmetrical push/pull twin engines

I see where you are going, but a booster engine means you are carrying dead weight the entire time the booster is not in use. Also, a small booster would only serve to boost clim rate, or in an engine out situation, extend a glide (not sustain a flight). Perhaps a better solution in the spirit...

    MOSAIC Rule Change

Recent development per Kitplanes Magazine: GAMA has thrown a wrench in the works with last minute objections just before the closing deadline. Kitplanes describes the motivation as a turf war move, with GAMA trying retain effective control over the more lucrative (profitable for them) segment of...

    Communication problems?

Not too long ago, I considered myself a reasonably skilled wordsmith with good spelling skills. I will admit that my literary skills are not what they used to be. I attribute that decline to several factors: 1. I am not as young as I used to be. 2. I am further separated from the time when I...

    Foldable, collapsible structures

Here is my GENIUS HAIR-BRAINED idea… for quick-fold cable braced wings, does anyone remember those slap-strap wrist bracelets that were popular with the kids? They even have an undercamber when extended. … just sayin’. 🤣

    Foldable, collapsible structures

In place of bolts in shear applications, some use what we referred to ‘pip pins’ (ball lock pins) for less critical attachments, and chamfer-ended stainless steel T-pins with ring lock retainers in structural shear attachments.

    April 8th Eclipse

I actually live in a good spot because I will see the total eclipse and I saw the annular eclipse a couple of month ago.
